ALCAR/ALA blend combines acetyl L-carnitine with RS-alpha lipoic acid.
Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-carnitine, derived from the amino acids L-lysine and L-methionine, and is naturally produced in the liver and kidneys. ALCAR and L-Carnitine are used in the human body in the catabolism and transport of fatty acids within mitochondria. Additionally, ALCAR is able to enter the central nervous system, where it acts as a powerful antioxidant. In these ways, ALCAR and L-Carnitine are supportive of energy metabolism and the nervous system.
RS-alpha lipoic acid (also known as RS-ALA or thioctic acid) is a racemic mixture of isomers of a sulfur-containing organic acid powerful antioxidant, and essential component of aerobic metabolism.
Alpha lipoic acid exists in two stereoisomers, the biologically active R-ALA, in addition to S-ALA, which is not produced in the human body. R-alpha lipoic acid is produced synthetically, and chemical manufacturing processes yield both the R- and S- isomers.
Supplementation of ALCAR and RS-ALA may help support the a healthy metabolism.
