Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid, is a derivative of caprylic acid, a saturated fatty acid and carboxylic acid. It’s a sulfur-containing compound that is essential for cellular respiration, which is a series of metabolic processes that converts the energy in oxygen molecules and nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the primary source of energy for the majority of cellular processes. ALA is a unique antioxidant as it is both water- and fat-soluble. It’s also garnered much attention for its longevity-enhancing properties.
Alpha lipoic acid occurs in two forms, R-ALA and S-ALA. They are enantiomers, meaning they are mirror images of each other but not identical. There is no way to reorient them to take on an identical appearance, much like individuals can’t reposition their hands to make them look the same. The R-ALA form is more stable with better absorption and bioavailability.
R-ALA is a potent antioxidant and supports the body’s existing antioxidant defenses. Cells reduce ALA to dihydrolipoic acid, further improving its bioavailability. ALA also influences cellular stress response pathways to support and sustain existing antioxidant levels. The increase in antioxidant capacity helps reduce inflammation and boosts cells’ ability to defend against pathogens and oxidative stress. R-ALA can also increase levels of glutathione, a fundamental compound in the body’s natural antioxidant systems.
ALA supplement’s antioxidant properties may protect and support skin health. It scavenges free radicals known to damage skin and protects the skin from the damaging effects of UV rays. By boosting glutathione levels, ALA supplements may reduce the signs of aging skin. ALA is a common ingredient in numerous skincare products, as it may improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Alpha lipoic acid supplements may help individuals trying to manage their weight. It reduces the activity of AMPK, which can increase hunger. Suppressing AMPK may help the body burn more calories while at rest too. ALA supplements also help reduce appetite.
R-ALA may improve several other areas of health. Its antioxidant properties support healthy cognitive function and memory by scavenging free radicals. It also enhances nerve function. One study found that ALA supplements work synergistically with physical therapy to provide greater improvements in nerve function.
Most individuals can take ALA supplements without side effects. Some might experience mild nausea or itching. Alpha lipoic acid may interact with medicines that control blood sugar. Consult with a doctor before starting any new supplements.
Individuals should take ALA supplements on an empty stomach, as certain foods can interfere with ALA’s absorption. Many individuals prefer ALA supplement capsules as the powder form has a sharp taste.
