Branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs are essential amino acids with aliphatic side chains, including L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine. BCAAs are not produced in the human body, but must be consumed from dietary sources. BCAAs account for 35% of the essential amino acids in muscle proteins and 40% of the amino acids required by human metabolism. BCAAs are required for protein synthesis necessary for muscle growth, in addition to helping to support healing of injured tissues and the healthy functioning of the nervous system.
BCAAs are commonly consumed as a dietary supplement by weightlifters and performance athletes in workout routines.
