Calcium gluconate is a compound containing the mineral calcium, combined with gluconic acid.Calcium supplements exist in several different compounds -- calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, calcium lactate gluconate and calcium pyruvate.
Although all of these provide calcium, each compound's value depends on different factors, like elemental calcium concentrations and absorption capabilities. Calcium carbonate is 40 percent calcium, calcium citrate is 21 percent calcium, and calcium gluconate is 9.3 percent calcium. Keep in mind the calcium content is only one factor. Bioavailability, or absorption rate, solubility, interactions with other medications or supplements, specific medical conditions of the individual, taste and cost are other factors to consider when selecting a calcium product.
Calcium gluconate, as a "calcium salt", is fairly soluble and is less chalky tasting than other forms of calcium.
Benefits of Calcium Gluconate
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is vital to proper function of the body. Having the right amount of calcium is crucial for building and maintaining strong bones. The body will actually take calcium from bones if there are low calcium levels. Cellular functioning, blood clotting, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and healthy teeth formation are all affected by calcium levels in the body. Calcium can also bind to other minerals and assist in eliminating them from the body.Calcium naturally exists in many foods, including dairy products, seaweed, quinoa, beans and nuts. Yet some people suffer from a disorder known as hypocalcemia, a calcium deficiency in the blood. The most common cause of hypocalcemia is vitamin D deficiency, due to poor diet or lack of exposure to the sun. This is because adequate amounts of vitamin D are required for proper absorption of calcium.
While calcium is best known for its role in bones, it can aid in many other areas as well. Keeping up with calcium requirements can help avoid breaks and strains. Think about bone health from an early age.
Purity and Concentrations of Calcium Gluconate
This pharmaceutical-grade calcium gluconate contains no fillers, additives or anti-caking agents. You will receive a resealable bag of this powder. Store in a cool, dry area protected from light. Reseal after each use.Potential Side Effects of Calcium Gluconate
Minor gastrointestinal side effects, headaches, irregular heartbeat and increased urination may occur from taking excessive amounts of calcium gluconate.Calcium supplements are not advisable for people with medical conditions that affect the body's ability to regulate calcium absorption and excretion. It should not be used if antacids or other calcium supplements are already present. Calcium supplements may negatively affect the absorption of the antibiotic tetracycline.
Suggested Use of Calcium Gluconate
While natural foods provide the best sources of calcium (one serving of a dairy product provides 300 mg of calcium), those who do not consume enough calcium from food sources may need to supplement their diet. The FDA recommends a Daily Value(DV) of 1000 mg calcium (for adults and children over 4 years of age). The suggested serving for Calcium gluconate is 5.6 grams, taken once or twice daily with meals. Using thefull bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for calcium gluconate, you can see that a rounded teaspoon (or more exactly, one and one fourth teaspoon) will give about 5.6 grams. Because calcium gluconate is 9.3 percent elemental calcium, taking 5.6 grams of calcium gluconate powder will yield 504 milligrams of elemental calcium, or 50% of the Daily Value.
Individual needs may vary. The FDA recommends the following Daily Intake Values of Calcium:.... ..For Infants: 600mg ..For Children Less than 4 years of age: 800 mg ..For Pregnant and Lactating Women: 1300 mg
Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Calcium Gluconate
Taking a vitamin D supplement together with calcium aids absorption, allowing it to be quickly dispersed throughout the body.. Calcium gluconate is easier to dissolve (more soluble) than many of the other forms of calcium.References & Further Research
