What is Chondroitin Sulfate?

Chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) - also known as a mucopolysaccharide - a type of compound that binds to collagen and elastin in the formation of cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate is a biological polymer derived from connective tissue and supports cartilage production.

As the body ages, it becomes less effective at repairing and regenerating tissues that include cartilage, which acts as a shock absorber for joints and vertebrae.

Chondroitin is present in the lining of the digestive tract, blood vessels, mucus membranes and arteries and helps promote normal blood flow throughout the body.

Benefits of Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin supports the integrity and resilience of cartilage.

Chondroitin Sulfate can be taken in conjunction with glucosamine sulfate, another compound used to support cartilage in the body.

Chondroitin sulfate is available as an eye drop for dry eyes. In addition, it is used during cataract surgery, and in a solution for preserving corneas used for transplants. It is approved by the FDA for these uses.

Chondroitin sulfate B is found in the dermis of the skin and is one of the constituents that help maintain skin viscoelasticity.

Chondroitin is synthesized from natural sources of cartilage, such as those derived from sharks or cows, and synthetic sources. It is important to keep in mind that chondroitin absorption takes time.

Purity and Concentration of Chondroitin Sulfate

Purebulk's chondroitin sulfate powder is extracted from bovine cartilage and is assayed by the manufacturer to contain at least 90% chondroitin sulfate. The remaining 10% is collagen material from the extraction process. There are no additives, fillers or anti-caking agents. You will receive a resealable bag containing this pure product.

Suggested Use of Chondroitin Sulfate

As a dietary supplement, take 750 mg (3/16 tsp) twice daily, or 1500 mg( 3/8 tsp) once daily, You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for Chondroitin Sulfate here.

When using chondroitin sulfate in conjunction with glucosamine, the typical serving size is 1200 milligrams of chondroitin and 1500 milligrams of glucosamine daily in divided servings.

Potential Side Effects of Chondroitin Sulfate

There have been isolated reports of nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation, indigestion, stomach pain and heartburn.

Because chondroitin is a natural anticoagulant, anyone with blood disorders or who is currently taking blood thinners or aspirin should consult a physician.

Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin can be taken with or without meals.

How should I store it?
