What is D-Mannose?
D-Mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in apples, peaches, cranberries, other berries and some plants.Absorbed by the body eight times slower than glucose, D-Mannose is not converted into glycogen or stored in the liver when ingested. Instead, as D-Mannose is excreted, it passes through the kidneys, fills the bladder, and flushes the urinary tract during urination. It also does not interfere with blood sugar regulation.
D-Mannose was originally identified as an aldohexose by the German chemist Hermann Emil Fischer in 1894. Fischer won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1902 for his work with sugars and purine synthesis. His greatest success however, was in 1890 when he synthesized glucose, fructose and mannose from glycerol.
