Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone, and it is one of the most prevalent steroids found in humans. Dehydroepiandrosterone concentrations peak between the ages of 20 and 30 and then sharply decline with age. The body synthesizes DHEA by converting dietary cholesterol into pregnenolone, a building block for numerous hormones. Via the CYP17 enzyme, pregnenolone converts into DHEA.
The body produces dehydroepiandrosterone in the adrenal glands, testes, ovaries, and brain. However, most dehydroepiandrosterone synthesis occurs in the adrenals due to the amount of CYP17 enzymes expressed there. DHEA is a critical endogenous precursor to produce the sex hormones androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estrogen. However, it performs several other biological functions by interacting with nuclear, cell surface, and neurotrophic factor receptors in the brain.
Low DHEA levels can have negative effects on heart health and emotional wellbeing. It also increases the risk of mortality. Keeping DHEA levels elevated isn’t only a concern for older adults either. By 30, DHEA levels begin to plummet. Over time, levels decrease by up to 80%.
DHEA’s most potent effect is reducing several negative aspects of aging. Several studies conducted on men taking DHEA noted improvements in mood, heart health, hip bone density, joint health, and more. In women, DHEA supplements showed improvements in mood, menopause symptoms, sexuality, heart health, and bone density.
Individuals with low DHEA often have lower bone density, making them more prone to bone fractures. Aging also diminishes bone density, so older adults may reap the most bone-related DHEA benefits. Some DHEA studies found the bone health benefits were particularly notable in older women.
The micronization process reduces the average size of DHEA particles. Micronized supplements are more bioavailable and easier to absorb.
A mesh number describes the size of the screen supplement particles can pass through. The number of holes in a one-inch square screen determines the mesh size. PureBulk’s DHEA supplement passes through a 200 mesh screen.
DHEA supplements may improve strength and exercise performance in certain individuals. Studies on older adults found DHEA improved their strength and physical functions. These improvements may help prevent falls and the associated bone fractures in the elderly. DHEA supplements may also enhance lean muscle mass in individuals with inhibited or impaired adrenal functions.
DHEA supplements may improve fat mass by influencing food intake. Animal studies have shown that DHEA reduced how much food the subjects consumed with a notable reduction in fatty foods. In humans, DHEA supplements help improve feelings of satiety after eating.
DHEA promotes heart health in a couple of ways. It helps protect blood vessel walls and maintains the overall health of blood vessels to improve vascular function. DHEA may help reduce lipoproteins in the bloodstream, as it uses cholesterol to create estrogen.
DHEA may help regulate moods, as it enhances the production of beta-endorphins and other happiness hormones. The improvements to wellbeing are notable in the elderly and individuals with adrenal insufficiency.
Most adults don’t experience side effects while taking DHEA supplements. However, due to DHEA’s interactions with hormones, DHEA supplements may cause minor effects like greasy skin, an increase in armpit hair growth, or acne.
