Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is necessary for the normal functioning of the central nervous system.

DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) is a 50/50 mixture of the synthetic D- form made in a laboratory and the L- natural form of this amino acid found in proteins. Phenylalanine is one of the few amino acids that can be utilized in its D- form.

Because DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) contains 50% L-phenylalanine and 50% D-phenylalanine, it possesses some of the effects of both forms.

DL-phenylalanine is a dietary supplement that aids in pain management and proper mood balance.

Phenylalanine plays a role in mood, appetite and mental alertness. It functions and acts as a building block for numerous proteins that are produced in the body.

The pain relieving effects of D-phenylalanine are believed to occur from its enhancing levels of endorphins and enkephalins, the body's naturally occurring opiates.

Phenylalanine occurs as a constituent of many proteins and is normally converted to tyrosine in the body.

L-phenylalanine (LPA) serves as a building block for the various proteins that are produced in the body. LPA can be converted to L-tyrosine (another amino acid) and subsequently to L-dopa, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. LPA can also be converted (through a separate pathway) to phenylethylamine, a substance that occurs naturally in the brain and appears to elevate mood.
