Benefits of Green Tea P.E. 50% polyphenols
Green tea differs from black tea and oolong tea in that it is not fermented. Even though all three teas are from the same plant, the difference in the way they are prepared has an impact on the way each is used.Because it is not fermented, green tea still retains its polyphenols, natural antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the body from free-radical compounds that destroy healthy cells.
The lighter processing method employed in producing green tea leaves leaves the polyphenols (including powerful antioxidants proanthocyanidin and catechin) intact.
In clinical studies, it has been demonstrated that polyphenols provide more antioxidant protection than vitamin E or vitamin C. Polyphenols also improve the performance of the body’s own natural antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione, a tripeptide that acts to minimize inflammation and protects cartilage.
Green tea contains gallocatechol or epigallocatechin (EGCG), a chemical compound that belongs to a group of compounds known as flavan-3-ol. Catechin is another of the flavon-3-ol group. Gallocatechin is present in bananas, persimmons and pomegranates as well as in green tea. This compound binds to a class of cell membrane receptors that acts in the central nervous system and in the immune system and hematopoietic cells. This action may explain why green tea has become popular as a health aid.
Due to this action on the central nervous system, green tea may enhance mental alertness and thinking.
Similarly, as this compound acts on certain receptors that are expressed on T-cells of the immune system and on macrophages and B cells, green tea may play a role in supporting the body's immune system. Numerous studies have been conducted researching the potential of green tea as an anticarcinogen.
