Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (also known as hypromellose or HPMC) is a semi-synthetic polymer consisting of substituted beta-linked D-glucose units. HPMC is used as a carrier or controlled-delivery additive in oral medications found in a variety of products. As a food additive, HPMC is an emulsifier, thickening and suspending agent, and an alternative to animal gelatin.
