L-arginine AKG/L-ornithine AKG provides alpha-ketoglutarate and the hydrochloride salts of L-arginine and L-ornithine. L-arginine and L-ornithine are non-essential amino acids that are central to the urea cycle, a process which allows the body to dispose of excess nitrogen. L-arginine, a proteinogenic amino acid, provides support for healthy metabolic and immune system function.

Alpha-ketoglutarate (α-Ketoglutarate or AKG) is a keto acid produced by de-amination of the amino acid, glutamate, and is a metabolic intermediate in the Citric Acid Cycle. Alpha-ketoglutarate is an important nitrogen transporter in biochemical pathways. The amino groups of amino acids are attached to alpha-ketoglutarate via transamination reactions, where it is then carried to the liver where the urea cycle takes place.

Supplementation of alpha-ketoglutarate, L-arginine and L-ornithine though L-arginine AKG/L-ornithine AKG may be considered by athletes and bodybuilders as part of their workout routine.
