What is L-Cysteine HCl?

L-cysteine hydrochloride is a form of the amino acid cysteine with a molecular component of hydrogen and chloride. It is a sulfur-bearing amino acid that is an important component of hair, nails and protein of the skin.

Physical training can significantly increase oxidative stress (Wikipedia) in the body, and L-cysteine supports recovery from exercise. It promotes immune system function and helps maintain optimal health.

L-cysteine is considered conditionally essential because it can be made in sufficient amounts by the body under normal circumstances. Dietary supplementation may be helpful if physical demands on the body exceed the natural ability of the body to manufacture enough L-cysteine.

Cysteine equalizes and sustains protein structure and aids in the formation of collagen, thereby promoting healthy skin, hair and nail texture and elasticity.

Cysteine performs several functions in the body, including playing a role in the production of L-taurine and glutathione.

Taurine is important to healthy functioning of the central nervous system. It also assists in regulating healthy blood pressure and vision and eye function. Taurine aids both thermogenesis (fat burning) and muscle building.

Glutathione is an antioxidant that ensures healthy cellular function and nerve signal efficiency. Direct glutathione supplementation has proven ineffective at increasing cellular glutathione levels (because it gets digested by stomach acids). Increasing L-cysteine levels through supplementation has proven effective for that purpose.

L-cysteine supplementation heightens N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) levels (C3H7NO2S). NAC is known to improve blood glutathione levels and preserve lean muscle mass.

L-cysteine is essential for T-cell production and immune system activation. It is also a component of the hormone insulin.

Cysteine can be manufactured from the amino acid methionine in the body. It is also found in high protein foods such as poultry and eggs as well as wheat, broccoli, garlic, onions and red peppers.

Health Benefits of L-Cysteine HCl

Cysteine is needed to manufacture taurine and is a component of the antioxidant glutathione. Its role as a taurine precursor is also helpful in lean muscle tissue gain and thermogenesis.

Cysteine is needed to metabolize essential biochemicals such as coenzyme A, heparin, biotin, lipoic acid and glutathione. Additionally, cysteine is required for proper vitamin B6 utilization.

Purity and Concentration:

Purebulk's pharmaceutical-grade amino acid L-cysteine HCl contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents. This monohydrate form of L- cysteine has a water molecule as part of the compound.

Suggested Use of L-Cysteine HCl

As a dietary supplement, take 500 mg (rounded 1/8 tsp) one to three times a day, or as directed by a physician. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for L-Cysteine HCl here. Since a serving size of 1/8 teaspoon is equal to 449 milligrams, a slightly rounded 1/8 tsp will be about 500mg.

Potential Side Effects of L-Cysteine HCl

L-Cysteine is generally safe at suggested serving sizes. High amounts are linked to oxidative stress and possible DNA damage. Consult with a physician prior to use. Persons with cystinuria should avoid using L-cysteine as they can form cysteine gallstones from its use. Drink plenty of water when using this supplement.

Mixing and Solubility of L-Cysteine HCl

This product dissolves quickly in hot water, more slowly in cold water, and has a pleasantly sour taste. Mix with water or citrus juice and drink.

L-cysteine supplementation may be most effective when used in conjunction with vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium and selenium.

How should I store it?

You will receive a resealable bag of this powder. Store in a cool, dry area protected from light. Reseal after each use.
