Facts

What is L-Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OAKG or OKG)?

L-ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) combines the power of ornithine with alpha-ketoglutaric acid. It promotes amino acid synthesis and protein availability.

Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) consists of the amino acid ornithine bonded to alpha-ketoglutarate molecules. These amino acids are dubbed conditionally essential. The body can synthesize them from other nutrients, but during periods of intense training they may not be produced in sufficient quantities.

This dietary supplement is an anabolic compound that can increase energy, endurance and muscle mass while inhibiting muscle breakdown, fatigue and fat buildup.

OKG helps produce the amino acid arginine which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland to release growth hormone (Wikipedia). This hormone boosts the metabolism of fat and protects muscle tissue. By helping excrete and eliminate ammonia released during exercise, ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) inhibits the buildup of lactic acid, which can cause muscle fatigue, soreness and poor stamina.

Adding the amino acid L-Glutamine to an OKG supplementation regimen can reduce recovery time following physically demanding activities by increasing muscle protein synthesis and counteracting catabolic processes. Glutamine plays a role in the physiological process known as the Krebs cycle (Wikipedia), responsible for breaking down carbohydrates in the body to produce energy.

Ornithine is found in high-protein foods such as meat, fish, and dairy products.

Health Benefits of L-Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate

Clinical studies have shown OKG supplementation to be effective in increasing protein synthesis, lowering protein catabolism, improving insulin and somatropin secretion and increasing absorption of amino acids and glucose to the muscles.

L-ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate reduces the rate at which ammonia accumulates. The nitrogen-sparing property of OKG may be attributed to its ability to conserve and retain glutamine. Glutamine, in turn, plays an integral role in protein turnover during the catabolic states created during intense exercise. OKG helps athletes trying to improve their endurance, decrease muscle fatigue and speed up recovery time.

Ornithine supports healthy skin and tissue. It is also required for the production of citrulline, proline and glutamic acid, which help bring energy to every cell in the body.

Potential Side Effects of L-Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate

No side effects have been reported with the use of OKG at suggested serving sizes. Higher amounts can cause nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. It is not recommended for children, women who are pregnant or nursing or those with serious liver or kidney disease.

Suggested Use of L-Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate

As a dietary supplement, take 1 gram to 2 gms (3/ 4 tsp to 1/ 2 Tbsp) daily, or as directed by physician. Individual needs vary. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for OKG here. A serving size of 3/4 teaspoon is equal to 1019 milligrams(mg). A serving size of 1/2 tablespoon is about equal to 2 grams (2000 milligrams). If higher quanitites are required, it may be necessary to increase gradually to avoid digestive upset.
