L-serine is a non-essential amino acid important to the proper functioning of many biological processes.
Even though L-serine is a non-essential amino acid, which means it may be synthesized from in the human body, it is nevertheless important in many metabolic pathways. L-serine participates in the biosynthesis of purines and pyrimidines and is one of three amino acid residues that are commonly phosphorylated by kinase enzymes during cell signaling in higher organisms (eukaryotes). Because of this, L-serine plays an integral role in the catalytic functions that mediate biological processes. L-serine also helps build the phospholipids required to produce cells in the body.
L-serine helps support muscle formation via protein synthesis, RNA and DNA function, amino acid metabolism and the maintenance of a healthy immune system.
