What is L-Theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid which can be found naturally in green tea (Camellia sinesis) and other species of Camellia. The health and relaxation benefits of drinking green tea have been widely discussed. It is now found in nutritional supplements, foods, protein bars, weight loss formulas and beverages.

Green tea is an abundant source of polyphenols (Wikipedia) known as catechins which are effective in countering free radicals, those molecules in the body that cause cell damage.

Because green teas sold in North America contain less than 10 milligrams of L-theanine per serving, most people don’t drink enough to feel its effect. The dietary supplement L-theanine may offer a better option.

Health Benefits of L-Theanine

It is suggested that L-theanine can encourage certain neurotransmitters and alpha waves produced by the brain in producing a calming effect. L-theanine has earned a reputation for promoting mental and physical relaxation without inducing drowsiness.

Purity and Concentration of L-Theanine

The pharmaceutical-grade amino acid in these capsules contains no additives, fillers or anti-caking agents. It is synthetically produced from mineral sources and is both vegetarian and vegan.

The gelatin capsules are from a bovine source. The vegetarian capsules are made of cellulose.

Suggested Use of L-Theanine

As a dietary supplement the suggested serving size for L-Theanine is one 500 milligram capsule one to three times a day (or as directed by a physician).

Potential Side Effects of L-Theanine

There are no known adverse effects of L-theanine at typical serving sizes. In amounts of more than 400 milligrams, some people experience sedation effects. Talk to a doctor before trying L-theanine, especially if suffering from kidney, liver or other chronic diseases or serious health conditions. Do not use this product if pregnant or breastfeeding.

The body needs a supply of all the amino acids in order to effectively create and utilize proteins. If supplementing any one of the amino acids it is important to have a balanced intake of the others.

How should I store it?
