Product Details

What is L-Cysteine HCl Anhydrous?

L-Cysteine HCl anhydrous is a hydrochloride salt of l-cysteine. Bonding cysteine to hydrochloride improves its absorption. L-Cysteine, or simply cysteine, is a semi-essential, sulfur-containing amino acid and an important structural component in many proteins. One of its unique traits is its ability to form or reduce disulfide bonds. As an antioxidant, the thiol group on cysteine reacts with reactive free radicals that may cause oxidative harm and stress. It is also necessary to synthesize the antioxidant tripeptide glutathione. Glutathione levels drop without sufficient cysteine.

Cysteine is present in many protein-rich foods, such as chicken, eggs, and legumes. It’s also frequently used as a flavoring agent. However, it’s often difficult to consume enough cysteine from food alone, and taking supplements can help produce more reliable results. N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) is another popular cysteine supplement.

Potential L-Cysteine HCl Anhydrous Benefits

Cysteine Supplement as an Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory

Cysteine is a critical building block for glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in the human body. Glutathione scavenges hydrogen peroxide free radicals and reduces them to harmless compounds. Free radicals can lead to oxidative stress and damage at the cellular level. Prolonged oxidative stress is one of the leading causes of premature aging. It can also cause or worsen chronic health problems. Research shows that supplementing with cysteine dramatically reduces free radicals by ramping up antioxidant production. Cysteine can also combat free radicals caused by exercise, thus attenuating inflammation and accelerating recovery. It also exerts anti-inflammatory effects throughout other parts of the body.

Cysteine Supplements and the Immune System

Cysteine supports the immune system through several mechanisms. It promotes immune activity and stimulates cells that protect the body against infections as part of natural immunity. One study found that cysteine inhibits viruses from spreading between cells, which can reduce the risk of infections.

Other Potential Cysteine Supplement Benefits

Cysteine may provide other benefits as well. Research shows that it helps combat the damaging effects of alcohol and reduces hangover symptoms in animals. A recent human trial reported similar findings. It also binds to heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, and lead. Additionally, cysteine provides the sulfur the body needs to perform numerous processes, such as DNA synthesis and repair, gene expression regulation, immunity, and protein synthesis.

Potential L-Cysteine HCl Anhydrous Side Effects

Cysteine is safe to take for most individuals. Some people may experience dizziness, nausea, or headache. Taking cysteine with food often prevents or reduces these side effects. Individuals with heart conditions should not take cysteine, as regular supplementation may increase homocysteine. Cysteine may interact with immunosuppressants, and individuals taking those drugs should consult with a physician before taking cysteine.
