Lutein is a xanthophyll and carotenoid compound derived from marigold (Tagetes erecta) that acts as a powerful antioxidant. Lutein (from the Latin luteus, meaning yellow) is found in high concentrations in dark-green leafy vegetables and in egg yolks.
Carotenoids are a member of a class of biological compounds that also include beta-carotene (provitamin A), alpha-carotene, lycopene and zeaxanthin. Like the well-known carotenoids alpha- and beta-carotene, lutein is responsible for the red, orange or yellow color of many food products (although it may be masked by the green chlorophyll in some vegetables). Also, like alpha- and beta-carotene lutein is an antioxidant that works to support health cellular structure and function by helping mitigate reactive free radical molecules in the body. However, unlike alpha- and beta-carotene, lutein cannot be changed by the body to vitamin A.
Lutein is found in the the macula in the retina of the eye, where it is able to absorb harmful UV radiation. In this way, lutein supports healthy vision.
PureBulk's Lutein powder is standardized to contain 5% lutein in a carrier of maltodextrin.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
PureBulk also sells measuring spoons and milligram weight scales for allocating precise serving sizes.
Because the lutein concentration in this product is 5%, a 100 milligram serving would net 5 milligrams of lutein, while a 400 milligram serving would net 20 milligrams of lutein.
