Magnesium citrate is the chemical combination of magnesium carbonate and citric acid. It is known as one of the most absorbable forms of magnesium, an essential mineral that plays a critical role in more than 300 metabolic reactions in the body.Magnesium is required in protein, fat and nucleic acid synthesis. It also helps the body use glucose and is a key player in the body’s energy transport system. Magnesium supports the heart, is helpful in maintaining tooth enamel and provides immune system support.
Magnesium is also important to heart function. People without sufficient magnesium manifest noticeable changes in the walls of their arteries and capillaries, which choke and compress in the absence of the mineral.
Food sources of magnesium include nuts, whole grains, legumes, tofu, green leafy vegetables, wheat bran, soybean flour, almonds, cashews, pine nuts, black walnuts and seafood. In the average diet, these foods are often not consumed in adequate amounts to meet the body’s need for magnesium and supplementation should be considered.
Magnesium citrate may also benefit specific groups at risk of magnesium deficiency, particularly the elderly, diabetics, and those who rely on diuretics. Women who use oral contraceptives may benefit from extra magnesium as well.
Magnesium works synergistically with calcium. When taking mineral supplements, a 1:2 ratio of magnesium to calcium (respectively) will maintain the necessary balance.
Health Benefits of Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium is a mineral required by every cell in the body. About half of the body's magnesium stores are found inside cells of body tissues and organs, and half are combined with calcium and phosphorus in bone. Only 1 percent of the body’s magnesium is found in blood. The body works very hard to keep blood levels of it constant.Magnesium is important for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It keeps normal muscle and nerve function, maintains and stabilizes heart rhythm, and it strengthens bones. It is also crucial in energy metabolism and protein synthesis (Wikipedia: Energy Metabolism and Protein Biosynthesis).
Purity and Concentration of Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium citrate contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.Suggested Use of Magnesium Citrate
As a dietary supplement, take 1/ 2 tsp to 1 teaspoon daily in liquid, or as directed by physician. The FDA recommends a daily intake value (Daily Value) of 400 milligrams (mg) each day. Elemental magnesium refers to the amount of magnesium in a compound. Magnesium citrate is 15 percent elemental magnesium, so a 3325 milligram (1 tsp) serving will yield 500 milligrams of magnesium, or 125% of the FDA Daily Value. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for magnesium citrate here. A serving size of 1/2 teaspoon is equal to 1662 milligrams. A serving size of one level teaspoon is equal to 3325 milligrams.
Because magnesium and calcium work synergistically, magnesium supplements should be taken simultaneously in a 1:2 ratio of magnesium to calcium, respectively. For example, an individual taking 500 milligrams of elemental magnesium should take a corresponding 1000 milligrams of calcium. Taking adequate amounts of calcium promotes digestion and stomach comfort.
Potential Side Effects of Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium supplements are safe if used as directed. To promote digestion and stomach comfort, take magnesium supplements with calcium.Very high amounts of magnesium supplements can cause diarrhea. Signs of excess magnesium can be similar to magnesium deficiency and include mental status changes, nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, extremely low blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.
Persons with a history of kidney problems, persons taking products containing magnesium and the elderly should consult their physician before beginning magnesium supplements.
Directions for preparing a clear Magnesium Citrate solution
If you add this magnesium citrate powder straight to warm or cold water it will not appear to dissolve. Instead it will cloud the water and eventually settle to the bottom of the glass undissolved. However, the solubility will increase as the temperature of the water in which you are dissolving it increases. The solubility will increase as the pH of the water decreases (more acidic). If you want to dissolve your magnesium citrate powder completely, add hot water and lemon juice (citric acid) and optionally a little sugar or sweetener for taste. By adding citric acid you will lower the pH of your solution from a chalky tasting 8.5 to a mildly sour tasting 4.0. If the water is 70°C (158°F) or hotter, the magnesium citrate will dissolve and the water will become clear in less than 1 minute and with no undissolved powder at the bottom of the glass.
Recipe for the preparation of a clear Magnesium Citrate solution.
1) Measure 1/2 level tsp Magnesium Citrate (1662 mg)2) Add the juice of 1/2 lemon, or add 830 mg Citric Acid powder.
3) Add 8 fluid ounces almost boiling hot water (between 70°C to 212°C).
4) Stir for about 30 seconds to 1 minute until water turns clear.
5) Add sugar or sweetener to taste.
6) Cool with ice or cold water, adding about 4 fluid ounces more water bringing total to about 12 fluid ounces. 7) Enjoy.
