What is N-Acetyl L-Cysteine?

N-acetyl L-cysteine capsules contain a sulfur-based amino acid needed to synthesize the antioxidant enzyme glutathione (Wikipedia), countering free radical molecules that can damage cell membranes and DNA.

N-acetyl L-cysteine - also known as NAC and acetyl-cysteine - is the acetylated and more bioavailable form of the sulfur-containing amino acid L-cysteine. NAC is not available in the diet and must be obtained through supplementation. Cysteine can be found in wheat, broccoli, garlic, onions and red peppers

Cysteine plays an integral role in the sulfation cycle. It donates sulfur in detoxification and methyl in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. It may enhance the benefits of regular exercise by shielding the body from oxidative stress.

NAC is a bit more expensive than the nonacetylated amino acid L-cysteine, but owing to its greater bioavailability NAC is a far more economical nutritional supplement.

Health Benefits of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

NAC assists in neutralizing and eliminating damaging free radicals in the body that can cause oxidative harm and stress. NAC may also strengthen the immune system by functioning as a glutathione precursor.

NAC aids liver function and can help prevent damage caused from overuse of acetaminophen (Tylenol). NAC is the standard medical treatment for acetaminophen overdose. NAC is used extensively in hospitals for patients with acetaminophen poisoning (Wikipedia).

NAC is also an excellent mucolytic agent, breaking down mucus in the body.

Purity and Concentration of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

These PureBulk capsules contain only pharmaceutical-grade N-acetyl L-cysteine powder with no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents. The vegetarian capsular material is cellulose. The gelatin capsular material is a bovine source gelatin.

Suggested Use of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

The suggested serving size for N-acetyl L-cysteine is one 700 milligram capsule taken up to twice daily.

Selenium and vitamin B6 and vitamin E help to enhance the antioxidant effects of cysteine.

Vitamin C supplements are also recommmended when taking NAC, as the Vitamin C prevents oxidation of the N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Vitamin C also helps keep glutathione produced from cysteine in its reduced form, aiding antioxidant properties.

Potential Side Effects of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

This product is safe at suggested serving sizes. Do not use if you are taking nitroglycerin or other heart medications. Keep out of reach of children. Diabetics should consult their physician before using N-acetyl L-cysteine - it may have an insulin-blocking effect.

Side effects at high amounts include nausea, headache, vomiting, dizziness and abdominal pain. Tolerance is generally excellent in most users.

As NAC may lead to the excretion of zinc and copper,(minerals required for proper hormone function), it is best to take these supplements simultaneously with NAC.

Bioavailability of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

NAC is the most bioavailable or most easily absorbed form of cysteine. You will find NAC is a bit more expensive than the non-acetylated amino acid L-cysteine, but owing to its greater bioavailability NAC is a far better nutritional supplement choice.

How should I store it?

You will receive this powder in a resealable bag. Store it in a cool, dry, dark location. Reseal tightly between uses.
