N-acetyl L-cysteine (also known as NAC and acetylcysteine) is the acetylated form of L-cysteine, a semi-essential, sulfur-containing amino acid that is an important structural component in many proteins. L-cysteine is notable for being able to form or reduce di-sulfide bonds, and is necessary for the synthesis of the anti-oxidant tripeptide, glutathione.
Supplementation of L-cysteine via N-acetyl L-cysteine supports the immune system and healthy metabolic processes as a component of protein synthesis, in addition to supporting cellular structural components in the form of the anti-oxidant, glutathione.
