Product Details

What is Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA)?

Para-aminobenzoic acid (4-aminobenzoic acid, PABA) is a non-protein amino acid often included in the B complex vitamin family as vitamin B10 or vitamin Bx. PABA is a widely distributed, naturally occurring compound. Several foods are rich in para-aminobenzoic acid, including baker’s yeast, brewer’s yeast, molasses, mushrooms, spinach, whole grains, liver, and kidney. While it is not a true vitamin or essential nutrient, it is a bacterial cofactor that helps synthesize folic acid (vitamin B9) in flora and fungi. However, while humans lack the enzymes to convert PABA into folic acid, research shows it still supports folate synthesis. Folic acid is an essential nutrient, meaning the body can’t synthesize enough to meet its nutritional needs. Instead, PABA supports the effects of taking vitamin B9 supplements.

Para-aminobenzoic acid has antioxidant properties and may provide benefits for the skin, hair, and more.

Potential Para-Aminobenzoic Acid Benefits

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid Antioxidants

PABA acts as an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals. PABA molecules donate electrons to radicals without becoming radicals themselves. It inhibits lipid peroxide accumulation, protects collagen from free radical damage, and defends the body against air pollutants and cigarette smoke.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid and Skin Health

Some of the earliest sunscreens included para-aminobenzoic acid as an active ingredient to protect the skin from UV ray damage. However, it is not a broad-spectrum sunscreen, as it only protects against UVA rays. Even so, UVA rays promote free radical damage, which PABA helps neutralize. PABA can also manipulate and balance uneven skin color. Some research shows it may decrease the excessive accumulation of connective tissues in the skin, such as what occurs during scar formation and some autoimmune conditions that affect the skin. As a result, it may help soften thickened skin.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid and Hair Health

PABA exerts notable effects on hair thickness and pigmentation. Numerous case studies show that individuals taking PABA supplements experienced increased hair thickness and darkening of gray hair. Some participants experienced re-pigmentation of new hair growth, restoring their hair to its original color. Others also experienced a cessation in hair loss.

Potential Para-Aminobenzoic Acid Side Effects

Para-aminobenzoic acid supplement powder may cause skin irritation with direct contact. Some individuals may be allergic to PABA. PABA may interact with and decrease the effectiveness of sulfa drugs and certain antibiotics. Bacteria require folic acid to synthesize their DNA. Sulfa drugs bind to and inhibit the enzymes that are essential for bacteria to make folate. As PABA supports folate synthesis, it may be counterproductive while taking sulfa-based antibiotics.
