What is Phenylethylamine HCL?

The neuromodulator phenylethylamine is naturally present in the brain and helps regulate mood, stress and focus.

Phenylethylamine (PEA) is a natural compound biosynthesized from the amino acid L-phenylalanine by enzymatic decarboxylation.

Phenylethylamine hydrochloride is the salt analog of phenylethylamine, made of a monoamine alkaloid and two stereoisomers. The basic form of phenylethylamine HCL can be derived naturally from dietary sources such as chocolate, but food sources are metabolized too quickly to significantly affect the chemistry of the body.

As an AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) neuroreceptor stimulant, PEA is responsible for improving acetylcholine release through the glutamatergic system, thus affecting mood.

Low levels of PEA have been associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as with certain types of depression. Unusually high levels of the chemical have been associated with schizophrenia.

Phenylethylamine HCl increases dopamine levels within the brain while inhibiting the action of dopamine transmitters.

Health Benefits of Phenylethylamine HCL

Phenylethylamine, a substance found in small amounts in chocolate, stimulates the brain to release a beta endorphin peptide that has analgesic effects and gives a feeling of well-being. It also increases blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

Phenylethylamine HCl has a very short lifespan. Five to 15 minutes is usually the half life observed as phenylethylamine HCL is quickly processed and metabolized in the body by the monoamine oxidase A, monoamine oxidase B, aldehyde dehydrogenase and dopamine betahydroxylase enzymes present.

Suggested Use of Phenylethylamine HCl

The suggested serving size for phenylethylamine HCl capsules is one 500 milligram capsule per day, depending upon individual needs. Many health practice professionals consider amounts larger than 500 milligrams per day to be unnecessarily large because of the chance of overstimulation and occasional side effects of mania and/or euphoria.

Potential Side Effects of Phenylethylamine HCL

Phenylethylamine should not to be taken with MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor medications used to treat depression. Phenylalanine should be avoided in people with certain inherited disorders that cause their bodies to build up too much phenylalanine such as Phenylketonuria (PKU). Use of phenylalanine may be contraindicated for individuals with hyperthyroidism or schizophrenia. Do not use if pregnant or nursing.

Common side effects include heartburn, nausea, constipation and mild headaches. Serious side effects include insomnia, confusion, dizziness or intense headache. Severe side effects associated with phenylalanine include tightness or sharp pain in the chest, difficulty breathing and a sudden increase in heart rate or blood pressure. Do not take more than one 500 milligram capsule in a single serving.

How should I store it?

Store in a cool, dry, dark location. Reseal tightly between uses.
