What is Red Wine Extract?

Modern science has now confirmed the health benefits associated with Red Wine consumption, and although you may not be enjoying the taste of this wondrous gift of nature most of the time for obvious reasons, you will enjoy a convenient way to enjoy its many healthy benefits (without having to relinquish the keys to your car) in this easy supplement. Red Wine Extracts possess high concentrations of oligomeric proanthocyanidins, including dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric OPCs, cathechin analogs and other flavonoids (quercetin, apigenin) that provide excellent antioxidant and free radical protection, as well as phenolic and polyphenolic constituents (including catechin and the all-important Resveratrol, etc.) that prevent platelet aggregation (clotting) in the blood. Other components are amino acids (leucine, arginine, cystine, phenylalanine, valine), tannins, lipids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic acids), sitosterol, phosphatidylserine, lecithin and vitamins C, A and E. Red Wine Extract is very helpful in enhancing cardiovascular health by strengthening blood vessels, improving blood circulation, minimizing bad cholesterol and reducing blood clotting or platelet aggregation. For these reasons and more, Red Wine Extract has become one of the most potent antioxidants known to exist and one of "nature's finest" for its crucial role in fighting free radical damage and enhancing immunity.

Red Wine Extract is rich in polyphenols, a compound that's high in antioxidants. It is known to be a rich source of flavonoids, those phytochemicals whose antioxidant properties may exceed those of the more well known sources like vitamin A, C, E, and beta-carotene. These anti-oxidants assist in protecting cells from damages caused by free radicals, and also promotes healthy circulation. Some people call these polyphenols “nature’s biological response modifiers” because of their ability to help the body fight viruses, allergens, and carcinogens. That means together with their many benefits, Red Wine Extract also exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-cancerous and anti-microbial capabilities. Red Wine Extracts also have compounds called procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs), or otherwise known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). Aside from being powerful antioxidants, OPCs also inhibit a number of enzymes that degrade connective tissue such as elastase, collagenase, and hyaluronidase. As strong antioxidants, they are also thought to help improve blood flow and strengthen the blood vessels. This improved blood circulation can significantly help strengthen and protect the heart. This positive effect on blood flow makes supplementation with Red Wine Extract an excellent idea for anyone who is likely to benefit from better circulation. Those with leg cramps, diabetes, varicose veins and numbness of the legs and arms stand to benefit the most from this supplement. The increased blood flow can also help aid erectile dysfunction. On top of the benefits already mentioned, eye diseases common to the elderly, like cataracts and macular degeneration, may be prevented by Red Wine Extract. Red Wine Extract is also believed to help fight minor eye problems such as eye strain.

Red Wine Extract contains resveratrol, which is a compound that occurs naturally in plants and is considered part of their natural defense system, protecting delicate tissue from illness and disease. Resveratrol is specifically found in grapevines with the highest concentration being in the grape skin. In particular, resveratrol has been demonstrated as a potent antioxidant as much at 50 times as effective as vitamin C alone. It has anticlotting effects that prevent the formation of thrombi or blood clots in the blood vessels, which are believed to be a cause of heart attacks and strokes. The incidence of heart disease and cancer among populations who consume regular quantities of red wine is dramatically less than those who don't – even if those consumers also engage in eating a high-fat diet. The research done on Red Wine Extract first came about in late 20th century from what is more popularly known as the "French paradox." It is aptly named as such because the French had very low rates of heart disease, considering their fatty diet should have contributed to higher incidence of heart diseases. Scientists believed this is because the French frequently consumed red wine. Further research has shown the OPC present in their red wine promotes cardiovascular health, and now, red wine extract has been found to contain the richest sources of OPCs. It can be said without a doubt that red wine extract is one of the most powerful antioxidants available.

What is Red Wine Extract used for?

With respect to good cardiovascular health, Red Wine Extract has become a well known supplement in preventing heart disease and arteriosclerosis. A lot of research data now indicate that the level of antioxidants may be a more significant and causative factor than cholesterol levels in determining the risk of developing heart disease. The powerful antioxidants in Red Wine Extract which include resveratrol keep arteriosclerosis at bay by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol that causes it, and the high flavonoid content in Red Wine Extract significantly reduces the likelihood of heart attack or stroke. Red Wine Extract has been shown effective in reducing platelet aggregation (clotting) in the blood, which consequently lowers the risk of arteriosclerosis, stroke and heart attacks. Additionally, it increases the concentrations of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs or "good" cholesterol help eliminate the "bad" cholesterol from the arterial walls and from the body) in the blood, while reducing the low-density lipoproteins (LDLs, or "bad" cholesterol) thus lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. This action also triggers better circulation of blood throughout the body, particularly to the heart. Resveratrol increases nitric oxide levels, which helps relax artery walls, thus also helping to maintain good blood flow and improved circulation.

Red Wine Extract is believed to significantly improve blood circulation, which benefits both cardiac and cerebral function. Furthermore, since OPCs can cross the blood-brain barrier, they can shield the brain and spinal nerves from the adverse effects of free radical damage. Recent studies demonstrate that Red Wine Extract's compounds (OPCs) may also be beneficiaal in inhibiting Alzheimer's disease and dementia and also enhancing cognitive and brain function (especially in women). Concurrent studies in 2008 from UCLA and Mt. Sinai Schools of Medicine have shown that Resveratrol can be protective in cases of Alzheimer's disease. In animal models, the neurology team studied beta amyloid, the proteins that stick together in Alzheimer's affected brains, and found that the polyphenols (Resveratrol) from red wine blocked precursor proteins from building up to produce the toxic beta amyloid protein, and decreased the ability of the beta amyloid protein to damage neurons as well. This worked when treating the neurons prior to toxic damage and suggested that administration of the compound to Alzheimer's patients might block the development of these toxic aggregates, prevent disease development and also ameliorate existing Alzheimer's disease. Also, Resveratrol boosts nitric oxide levels if the body cannot produce nitric oxide from L-arginine, to relax artery walls thus promoting better circulation and blood flow to the brain.

As one of the finest antioxidants found in nature, Red Wine Extract supports the immune system and works to combat free radical damage to cells and tissue and defend the body against serious malignant disease and infection. This herbal supplement contains resveratrol and is a great source of nature's most potent antioxidants, tannin compounds called proanthocyanidins (also called OPCs for oligomeric procyanidins or PCOs for procyanidolic oligomers) that provide a high degree of antioxidant capability which can stand any form of free radical damage. These compounds allow the body's cells to absorb vitamin C, which is helpful in protecting cells from the free radicals that can bind to and destroy cellular compounds. Such attributes are believed to be helpful in strengthening the immune system and shielding the body from damaging material and other infections. Also known as flavonols, these versatile healing compounds are different from flavonoids because of their simple chemical structure, which enables them to be readily absorbed into the bloodstream. They function actively against fat-soluble and water-soluble oxidants, thus shielding the cells from damage. Studies and tests indicate that OPCs may be as much as fifty times more effective than vitamin E and twenty times more potent than vitamin C in terms of bioavailable antioxidant activity. Studies have shown that Red Wine Extract not only improves the development of normal cells, but it can also prevent the spread and growth of abnormal cells. Furthermore, Wine tannins may even trigger and promote cell renewal by working synergistically with mucosal proteins.

Who uses Red Wine Extract?

Healthy adults, as well as those that are sick, may benefit from supplementing with grape seed due to its ability to help fight free radicals. Regardless of gender, age, and medical condition, free radicals are a danger to everybody’s body and holding them off is never a bad idea. Those likely to benefit from increased blood flow, including people who suffer from leg cramps, Type 2 diabetes, varicose veins, and leg and arm numbness can experience relief by taking grape seed extract. The increased blood flow may even help to treat erectile dysfunction and eye diseases common in senior citizens, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Those suffering from fibromyalgia, a disorder characterized by chronic muscle pain and stiffness, may also find the regular ingestion of grape seed extract an effective treatment for their symptoms. Those concerned about the effects of aging on skin elasticity enjoy many healthy benefits when taking grape seed extract as it promotes healthy cell growth and skin elasticity. The procyanidins contained in grape seed extract bond with collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body and a key component of skin, bone, teeth, hair, and gum tissues. Procyanidins protect the body from sun damage, which also causes premature aging of the skin.

Research has shown that Red Wine Extract strengthens and supports healthy cardiovascular function, promotes neurological health, and a sturdy immune system. New research confirms and extends the possible health benefits of the substance – specifically working by boosting the metabolism to make muscles burn more energy and work more efficiently, protecting the person consuming the compound from obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and more. The antioxidant characteristics have been shown to boost cell protection and tissue development, improving the adverse effects of aging and preventing free radical damage. Resveratrol is intrinsically linked to heart disease prevention because of the high concentration of antioxidants in the compound, so individuals at risk for heart disease may find the protective qualities useful. Researchers recently demonstrated that resveratrol, a compound in Red Wine Extract, significantly neutralized the bad effects of a high-fat, high-calorie diet in mice, extending the animals' life spans and preventing adverse effects on their livers and hearts and reducing obesity.

What are some of the common effects of Red Wine Extract?

For good overall vascular health, Red Wine Extract is one of the top herbal supplements that will maintain the health of capillaries, through which the blood transports nutrients to individual cells and takes away waste products. Red Wine Extract's Resveratrol can improve peripheral blood circulation as well, relieving pain and swelling in arms, ankles and legs and resulting in fewer nighttime cramps, and is thought to result in less numbness and tingling, as well as varicose veins. Recent studies suggest that consuming Red Wine Extract, containing resveratrol, may provide the following protective benefits: protection against liver damage, osteoarthritis, pancreatitis, diabetic kidney disease, risk of stroke, and Alzheimer's. Additionally, many people report a feeling of appetite suppression which, in turn, can translate to weight loss.

What is the daily suggested dose of Red Wine Extract?

The commonly recommended dose for Red Wine Extract varies between as little as 50 milligrams, which is less than 1/32 of a teaspoon, to as much as 500 milligrams, which is just over 1/8 of a teaspoon. Completely accurate dosing is not usually required with this supplement, but if the accuracy of your dose is important, it is recommended that you use a calibrated milligram weight scale. A quarter of a teaspoon equals is equivalent to 811 mg, or just a bit below 1 gram, for the bulk density of this Red Wine Extract powder. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for Red Wine Extract here.

What kind of results do people anticipate while taking Red Wine Extract?

The common effects of regularly taking Red Wine Extract are healthier looking skin, reduced pain as a result of arthritis, greater flexibility of the joins, and improved vision. Over the long-term, many regular takers of Red Wine Extract experience a reduction in the lipoproteins, or the fats that cause the 'bad' cholesterol. Because grape seed extract delays the oxidation of low density lipoproteins, those are less likely to cause plaque which hardens the veins and arteries and can clog. Additional effects include reduction of fat in the blood, lowered blood pressure, reduction of blood vessel scleroses and reduction of blood viscidity – all of which are signs of a healthy cardiovascular system more likely to avoid heart disease.

The health benefits of drinking red wine have been widely recognized for years, and researchers believe that the resveratrol in red wine is responsible for protective effects on human health and aging. The Polyphenols contained in Red Wine Extract are potent antioxidants that include resveratrol, quercetin, catechin, epicatechin, prodelphidins, and proanthocyanidinsoligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) – all of which have a synergistic effect with other antioxidants such as vitamin C in the strengthening of cell membranes while protecting cellular organelles from oxidation damage. Free radicals, which are generated by normal body processes – breathing, digestion – and exposure to pollution, toxins, and UV radiation, attack healthy cells. Free radical damage is associated with a variety of health complications such as cardiovascular and immunity diseases. One of the most compelling current theories is that resveratrol may have a calorie-restriction capability by activating proteins called sirtuins, which are important regulators of the aging process.

Contraindications and Potential side effects of Red Wine Extract

Do not take Red Wine Extract if you have anemia or if you are taking blood-thinning medication (aspirin, Coumadin, etc). Since the tannin content of Red Wine Extract is high, it may counter the effects of iron supplements and should be taken at a different time. Currently, there are no side effects reported with taking Red Wine Extract, and no drug interactions have been reported either. In some cases, people consuming more than 300mg at a single time have reported mild nausea, but reducing the single dose to multiple doses taken throughout the day has shown to quickly eliminate the problem. Naturally, do not take grape seed extract if you're allergic to grapes. As always, if you have concerns or questions, consult a physician or a health care professional before taking any supplements. Before taking any kind of medicine, herbal or not, check with your doctor to ensure that the supplement you want to take is right for you. You may be allergic or you may have a sensitive stomach which may raise the need for special instruction as far as dosage goes.

Grapeseed Extract Kills 76% of Leukemia Cancer Cells in 24 Hours
January 06, 2009; Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
A new study conducted at the University of Kentucky in the United States, and published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, found that leukemia cancer cells exposed to grapeseed extract (GSE) were rapidly killed through a process of cell suicide known as "apoptosis."

Oral Grape Seed Extract Inhibits Prostate Tumor Growth and Progression in TRAMP Mice
This study has identified, for the first time, that oral GSE inhibits prostate cancer growth and progression in TRAMP mice, which could be mediated via a strong suppression of cell cycle progression and cell proliferation and an increase in apoptosis

Grape Seed Extract Inhibits In vitro and In vivo Growth of Human Colorectal Carcinoma Cells
Accumulating evidences suggest the beneficial effects of fruit-and-vegetable consumption in lowering the risk of various cancers, including colorectal cancer. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo anticancer effects of grape seed extract (GSE), a rich source of proanthocyanidins, as well as its associated mechanisms against colorectal cancer was investigated.

In a study from the University of Kentucky Graduate Center for Toxicology and published in the January, 2009, issue of Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, scientists found that Red Wine extract stimulated leukemia cells to commit suicide, a process called cell apoptosis. A number of studies have already revealed that eating fruit and vegetables helps to prevent cancer, and previous research has shown Red Wine extract has an effect on skin, breast, bowel, lung, stomach and prostate cancer cells, which is llikely due to the presence of proantho-cyanidins, a family of antioxidant compounds. In lab experiments, within twenty-four hours, 76% of leukemia cells exposed to the extract were killed off, while healthy cells were unharmed. The University of Kentucky study is the first to test Red Wine-Grapeseed extract's impact on a blood cancer, and these results could have implications for the incorporation of agents such as Red Wine extract into prevention or treatment of hematological (blood) malignancies and possibly other cancers.

According to researchers at Harvard Medical School, the resveratrol content and a class of enzymes known as sirtuins in Red Wine Grapes have been shown to enhance cell survival during times of stress, delay cell death and extend life. It may be a way to boost the principal "anti-ageing" enzyme in living cells. The researchers claim that Resveratrol, which has already been credited with Red Wine’s ability to lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, may be the most potent anti-ageing booster ever discovered. In addition, researchers at the University of Missouri show Resveratrol reduces oxidative stress in nerve cells and may protect against age-related nerve changes.

In 2009, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School showed that increased intake of the flavonoid apigenin, found in Red Wine (and celery, parsley and cooked tomato), may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by twenty percent in a large, population-based study. The mechanism included an inhibitory effect on endogenous estrogen activity or a reduction on circulating estrogen levels via competition for estrogen receptors or suppression of estrogen biosynthesis.

Macular degeneration may be slowed by the use of Red Wine Extract, and it may also reduce myopia and improve vision that is stressed by computer screens or glare. Red Wine Extract's OPCs are said to promote tissue regeneration, strengthen and repair connective tissue, enhance collagen production, revitalize ageing skin and promote tissue elasticity, all of which also helps to reduce the tendency to bruise easily and increases the healing of injuries.

Test tube research has shown that the polyphenols in Red Wine Extract inhibit the growth of the Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes tooth decay. Other research has indicated that the Resveratrol content in Red Wine Extract may be more effective in combatting three strains of bacteria that cause diarrhea than several over-the-counter antidiarrheal medicines. Red Wine Extract is said to reduce histamine production, thus moderating allergic and inflammatory responses, and this action has helped many allergy sufferers.

According to recent research (2008) from Peninsula Medical School, England, the resveratrol found in Red Wine, Grape Skin and Pine Bark can protect against cellular damage to blood vessels caused by high production of glucose in diabetes, claiming Resveratrol's antioxidant effects are well documented. But the new research establishes the link between high levels of glucose, its damaging effect on cell structure and the ability of resveratrol to protect against and mend that damage. Moreover, resveratrol could be used to block the damaging effect of glucose, which, in turn, might fight the often life threatening complications that accompany diabetes. It could well be the basis of effective diet-based therapies for the prevention of vascular damage caused by hyperglycemia in the future.
