What is Rhodiola Sacra Extract?

Tibetan Rhodiola Sacra is a revered medicinal plant found in the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, and is a member of the family Crassulaceae, a family of plants native to the arctic regions such as Eastern Siberia. Because it grows in such a pure and cold survival environment, this precious adaptogenic herbal plant is able to retain the best medical qualities. Totally non-toxic to the human system, it has been used successfully for centuries to nourish the heart and provide protection from strokes. Rhodiola contains salidrosides, tyrosol, dendrolasin, safranal, 17 amino acids needed by the human body, of which 7 can not be manufactured in the body. It also has 21 trace elements, as well as various vitamins and volatile oils, alkaloid and flavones.

The root of rhodiola has been utilized in the traditional medicine of many countries. Classified as an adaptogen, Rhodiola is a substance that promotes a normalizing action on the body, increasing resistance to adverse conditions such as infections, free radical damage, and aging, among others. Rhodiola contains phenylpropanoids such as rosavin, rosarin and rosin, as well as the compounds salidroside, flavonoids, tannins and essential oils. Rhodiola also contains a wide range of antioxidant compounds, including p-tyrosol, organic acids (gallic acid, caffeic acid, and chlorogenic acid), and flavonoids (catechins and proanthocyanidins). The stimulating and adaptogenic properties of rhodiola are attributed to p-tyrosol, salidroside, rhodioniside, rhodiolin, rosin, rosavin (the constituent currently used for the standardization of extracts), rosarin, and mad rosiridin.

As an adaptogen, rhodiola increases the body's resistance to infection and promotes healing by increasing resistance to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. Rhodiola's effects are attributed to its ability to optimize serotonin and dopamine levels and to its influence on opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins. Rhodiola influences levels and activity of biogenic monoamines such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the cerebral cortex, brain stem, and hypothalamus. Rhodiola has a nonspecific ability to assist the body to withstand stress and maintain normalcy even when threatened with pathological conditions. Rhodiola is able to both enhance and shield the immune system at the same time because of its ability to restore the metabolic state of balance, or homeostasis, in the body. It also significantly improves the proliferation of natural killer cells (NK) in the stomach and spleen.

What is Rhodiola Extract used for and who uses it?

The Rhodiola herb has been a popular fixture in traditional medical systems for a long time now in both Eastern Europe and Asia. Russians have drunk rhodiola tea for centuries as an energy booster, and Russian as well as Chinese scientists have researched the benefits of rhodiola root for several decades. Rhodiola root, also called rhizome has a reputation for stimulating the nervous system, fighting depression, enhancing work performance, decreasing fatigue, and reducing high altitude sickness. This herb has been categorized as an adaptogen by Russian researchers due to its property of being able to strengthen resistance to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. The adaptogenic, cardiopulmonary protective, and central nervous system activities of rhodiola sacra root have been attributed primarily to its ability to influence levels and activity of monoamines and opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins. There have also been claims that rhodiola enhances sexuality.

Rhodiola is effective in improving mood and alleviating depression. It has a positive effect on both physical and mental performance, minimizes fatigue, and keeps high altitude sickness at bay. Rhodiola has been demonstrated effective in dealing with cardiac problems brought about or aggravated by stress. It has also been shown beneficial in fighting infections, nervous system disorders, and even motion sickness. Other uses include treating fatigue, depression, anemia, impotence, infections, cancer, nervous system disorders and headache; for longevity, and to enhance fertility. Rhodiola also has potent antioxidant properties. By reducing the negative impact of free radicals, Rhodiola is able to significantly contribute in the fight against all the diseases associated with aging.

Rhodiola Sacra significantly improves and purifies the overall quality of the blood, and it also boosts the immune system by improving circulation. It has been found to alleviate and soothe angina caused by coronary artery insufficiency. Also, it was discovered that it had great success in treating the effects of radiation, a lack of oxygen, toxins and fatigue. Rhodiola Sacra is effective in the prevention of cerebral thrombosis and atherosclerosis. Rhodiola Sacra also aids during the recovery period from cerebral infarction, thus protecting blood vessels. It can also be beneficial to the myocardial system because it can help prevent and relieve angina pectoris. Rhodiola Sacra can also minimize the risk from hypertension by reducing blood viscosity. It is effective in relieving headaches and fatigue as well and also helps in improving memory and delaying senility.

What kind of results do people anticipate while taking Rhodiola Extract?

Rhodiola has long been used to treat depression and fatigue. Russian researchers were the first to discover Rhodiola's ability to help the body respond more efficiently to stress caused by chemical, biological, and physical variables. In essence, rhodiola aids the body so it can respond to stress more efficiently. It has been referred to as an adaptogen, because it allows the body to recover from stress by increasing levels of the brain's feel-good chemicals, betaendorphins, thus initializing the chemical process necessary to adapt to stressful situations.

Rhodiola has been demonstrated beneficial in improving work performance, and reducing symptoms linked with stress, such as insomnia, irritability, hypertension, depression, and headaches. In one study, 67% of participants suffering from depression had full remission of their symptoms, and became more active, more sociable and more resourceful, and 65 percent had complete disappearance of their depression. Rhodiola can also help in burning fat and losing weight by activating the body's store of adipose lipase, a key enzyme that helps burn its fat deposits. A Russian study found that subjects who took rhodiola lost 20 pounds in three months, compared to just 7 pounds in participants who took placebos.

Rhodiola also strengthens the immune system by reducing the effect of stress, one of the main factors that weaken the body's ability to defend against illness. Rhodiola has also shown an ability to enhance the efficiency of the natural killer (NK) cells and increase T-cell immunity, which in turn assists the immune system in guarding against both infection and cancerous cellular changes. By boosting immune system function, rhodiola also helps the body combat conditions associated to free-radical damage, such as heart disease and mental deterioration. To athletes, rhodiola may be of special benefit because it helps normalize heart rate after intense exercise, and increases protein synthesis and blood flow throughout the body. It can also help in lowering blood pressure and prevent stress-induced arrhythmia.

What is the daily suggested dose of Rhodiola Extract?

The typically recommended dose for Rhodiola Extract varies between 200 to 400 milligrams per day, depending upon individual needs. One eighth level tablespoon will supply approximately 395 milligrams, or just about 400 milligrams for the bulk density of this Rhodiola Extract powder. Experimental observation on anti-oxidation of Rhodiola sacra extract
This paper provides theoretical evidence for elucidation of the anti oxidation mechanism of Rhodiola sacra. METHODS:The experiment was finished in the Beijing Laboratory of Bioactive Substances and Functional Foods,Beijing Union University from February to July 2004.The 14 month old male Kunming mice of clean degree, which were provided by the Animal Center of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, were randomly divided into 4 groups with 10 in each:blank control group, low dosage group, high dosage group and positive control group. The effects of Rhodiola sacra extract on the contents of brain protein carbonyl content, hydroxy free radical, serum products of peroxidative lipid- malondiadehyde(MDA),activities of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GSH Px) were studied. RESULTS:After oral administration of Rhodiola sacra extract for 58 days as compared with the control group, the contents of brain protein carbonyl, hydroxy free radical and MDA were decreased in the high and low dosage groups(P< 0.05);The serum SOD specific activity were increased in the high and low dosage groups(P< 0.05),while and the GSH Px specific activity only increased in the high dosage group(P< 0.05).CONCLUSION:Rhodiola sacra extract decreases the content of hydroxy free radicals in tissue and protects the tissue protein and cell membrane through increasing the in vivo activities of GSH Px and SOD.

Experimental analysis of therapeutic properties of Rhodiola rosea herb and its possible application in medicine
The paper presents a review of the scientific publications on Rhodiola rosea known for its adaptogenic characteristics. Biologically active substances salidroside, rosin, rosavin, rosarin and tyrosol, which are mainly found in rhodiola root, demonstrate therapeutic effect. These active components effect the central nervous system by increasing the ability to concentrate, the mental and physical power; they are efficient in the asthenic states and improve general resistance of the cells and the organism against the harmful outer influence. They also prevent the heart system from stress and arrhythmias, and posses some antioxidant activity. Some preclinical and clinical data of the rhodiola root preparations are discussed in the survey. The interaction of rhodiola root with other medicines, its usage and effect, recommended doses, and its side effects are also reviewed in the paper.

Acute Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise performance
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acute and 4-week Rhodiola rosea intake on physical capacity, muscle strength, speed of limb movement, reaction time, and attention. PHASE I: A double blind placebo-controlled randomized study was performed, consisting of 2 sessions (2 days per session). Day 1: One hour after acute rhodiola rosea intake (R, 200-mg Rhodiola rosea extract containing 3% rosavin + 1% salidroside plus 500 mg starch) or placebo. Speed of limb movement (plate tapping test), aural and visual reaction time, and the ability to sustain attention were assessed. Day 2: Following the same intake procedure as on day 1, maximal isometric knee-extension torque and endurance exercise capacity were tested. Following a 5-day washout period, the experimental procedure was repeated, with the treatment regimens being switched between groups (session 2). PHASE II: A double blind placebo-controlled study was performed. Subjects underwent sessions 3 and 4, identical to Phase I, separated by a 4-week rhodiola intake, during which subjects ingested 200 mg rhodiola or placebo per day. PHASE I: Compared with placebo, acute rhodiola intake in Phase I increased time to exhaustion from 16 min to 17 min. Accordingly, VO2peak and VCO2peak increased during rhodiola compared to Placebo. Pulmonary ventilation tended to increase more during rhodiola rosea than during P. All other parameters remained unchanged. PHASE II: Four-week rhodiola intake did not alter any of the variables measured. Acute Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise capacity in young healthy volunteers. This response was not altered by prior daily 4-week rhodiola intake.
