Vitamin B12 (also called cobalamin) is a water-soluble B vitamin containing the biochemically rare element cobalt. Vitamin B12 is involved in a multitude of metabolic processes in the human body, especially DNA synthesis and regulation, fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Vitamin B12 is primarily found in a wide range of animal foods, including eggs, meats and milk. This sometimes means that vegans may not meet the necessary dietary intake of this vitamin.
Vitamin B12 consists of a class of chemically related compounds, including cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin. Some of these, such as cyanocobalamin, may not necessarily occur in nature, however all of them possess biological activity. PureBulk's cyanocobalamin powder is a semi-synthetic form of Vitamin B12 derived from bacterial fermentation that is safe for vegans and vegetarians. Vitamin B12 1% powder is mixed with 99% mannitol for more convenient serving size measuring and consumption.
