What is Vitamin E Acid Succinate?

Vitamin E acid succinate is an ester of d-alpha tocopherol, the natural form of the vitamin. It is created by combining succonic acid with d-alpha tocopherol, resulting in a dry powdered form of the vitamin that is quickly absorbed by the body.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin found in many foods, fats and oils. It is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants destroy free radical molecules, which are harmful compounds in the body that damage DNA (genetic material) and even cause cell death. Antioxidants provide some protection to cell membranes and also help reduce the damage caused by toxic chemicals and pollutants.

People who are unable to absorb fat properly may develop vitamin E deficiency. Symptoms of serious vitamin E deficiency include muscle weakness, loss of muscle, abnormal eye movement, impaired vision and unsteady gait.

Chronic deficiency may cause liver and kidney problems. Slight deficiencies are not uncommon.

Vitamin E in the diet is naturally found in vegetable oils (olive, sunflower, and safflower oils), nuts, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

Health Benefits of Vitamin E Acid Succinate

The most critical role of vitamin E is in maintaining the integrity of the body's intracellular membranes and providing a defense line against tissue damage resulting from oxidation.

Vitamin E has protective attributes because it can reduce oxidation of lipid membranes and unsaturated fatty acids and prevent the breakdown of other nutrients caused by oxygen.

As an antioxidant that prevents free radical damage in cell membranes, vitamin E helps to stabilize cells and protect the tissues of the skin, eyes, liver, breast and testes, which are more sensitive to oxidation.

The protective, nutritional antioxidant function of vitamin E also works synergistically with other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, glutathione (L-cysteine), and selenium.

Vitamin E keeps arteries flexible and elastic to allow blood to flow freely and helps prevent arteries from clogging.

By supporting the immune system, antioxidants such as vitamin E can also help protect against oxidative damage to DNA.

Suggested Use of Vitamin E Acid Succinate

The suggested serving size for vitamin E acid succinate is 330 mg (1/8 tsp) taken daily or as directed by physician. That will provide 400 IU (International Units) of vitamin E, 1333% of the Daily Value for the vitamin. You can see the bulk density/volumetric equivalents for Vitamin E Acid Succinate here.

Potential Side Effects of Vitamin E Acid Succinate

Vitamin E is safe at suggested serving sizes. Too much vitamin E can cause nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fatigue, weakness, headache, blurred vision, rash, bruising and bleeding and possible stroke.

Persons with diabetes or heart disease should not take more than 400 IU/day. In people taking blood thinners (anticoagulants), more than 800 IU a day of vitamin E may interfere with the body's ability to clot blood.
