Product Details

What is Cinnamon Bark Powder Extract 4:1?

Cinnamon bark extract powder comes from the bark of the Cinnamomum cassia tree. Cassia cinnamon, also known as Chinese cassia and Chinese cinnamon, is the most common variety of cinnamon spice sold in North America. Traditional Chinese herbology considers it one of the 50 fundamental herbs for health. Chinese herbalists have recorded cinnamon uses back to 2700 B.C., primarily as a remedy for diarrhea, menstrual difficulties, and fevers. Ayurvedic cultures relied on cinnamon herbal mixes for similar purposes.

Cinnamon bark extract is a polyphenolic polymer that is rich in flavonoids and catechins—the same primary bioactive compounds found in green tea. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties and exerts beneficial effects on heart health and blood sugar. Cinnamon bark extract’s flavor and aroma are characteristic of the common kitchen spice. However, the extract powder comes from the water-soluble components of cinnamon bark without the spicy oil component. The extract is highly concentrated, and including cinnamon oil would make it toxic.

Potential Health Benefits of Cinnamon Bark Extract

Cinnamon as an Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory

Cinnamon is a powerful antioxidant that rivals the potency of α-tocopherol (vitamin E). Cinnamon scavenges free radicals, reduces oxidative stress, and boosts the levels of other antioxidants. It also impedes the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), one of the leading biomarkers of aging and degenerative diseases. Its antioxidant effects are strong enough that it can act as a natural food preservative. Although inflammation is a critical part of the immune and wound-healing response, chronic inflammation contributes to many illnesses and premature aging. Cinnamon can reduce inflammatory markers and inhibit the activation and production of inflammatory cytokines.

Cinnamon and Heart Health

Cinnamon bark extract supports heart health through several mechanisms. It helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL (good) cholesterol levels. It also improves insulin sensitivity, which may help lower blood sugar levels. Another potential mechanism for reducing insulin resistance is cinnamon’s ability to slow carbohydrate absorption after meals. Additionally, cinnamon has biological compounds that can mimic insulin and support insulin function. Multiple studies show cinnamon also has beneficial effects on blood pressure when taken for at least eight weeks.

Potential Antimicrobial and Antiviral Cinnamon Benefits

The dental industry uses cinnamon for its antimicrobial properties, as it can target oral pathogens that contribute to cavity formation, toothaches, and other periodontal problems. It also fights bacteria strains known to cause acne. Cinnamon has novel implications as an antiviral. The body needs T cells to kill invading viruses. Cinnamon limits T cell exhaustion, allowing the immune system to function optimally. Studies also show that cinnamon enhances the body’s resistance to infections by inhibiting viral DNA replication and protein synthesis.

Cinnamon and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Women may find relief from PMS symptoms by taking cinnamon bark extract. One study noted that women taking cinnamon supplements during the first three days of their menstrual cycle experienced a significant reduction in pain and cramping than the placebo group. Another study reported similar findings, noting that cinnamon supplements dramatically improved menstrual pain severity compared to a placebo. Additional research shows that cinnamon may be effective for reducing menstruation-related nausea and menstrual bleeding.

Potential Side Effects of Cinnamon Bark Extract

Cinnamon bark powder extract does not typically cause side effects at suggested serving sizes. Individuals with cinnamon allergies should not take cinnamon bark extract. Individuals taking medication to manage their blood sugar or blood pressure should consult a physician before taking cinnamon bark extract, as cinnamon may lower both. Individuals with liver conditions should also discuss cinnamon supplements with a doctor.
