L-Cysteine HCl monohydrate is the hydrochloride salt of L-cysteine that is easier for the body to absorb. L-Cysteine, or simply cysteine, is a semi-essential, sulfur-containing amino acid. It is an important structural component in many proteins. L-cysteine is notable for its ability to form or reduce disulfide bonds and synthesize the antioxidant tripeptide glutathione. Without adequate cysteine, the body can’t sustain optimal glutathione levels. L-cysteine acts as an antioxidant, too. Its thiol group reacts with reactive free radicals that may cause oxidative harm and stress.
High-protein foods like legumes, eggs, and chicken contain cysteine. It’s also a common flavoring agent for many foods. However, it’s impossible to measure how much cysteine exists in dietary sources. Taking cysteine supplements provides better accuracy and results. PureBulk offers several cysteine supplements in addition to l-cysteine HCl monohydrate, including N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and l-cysteine HCl anhydrous.
Glutathione is an antioxidant powerhouse that the body needs cysteine to make. Glutathione scavenges and renders free radicals harmless. When free radical levels exceed the available antioxidants, they can wreak havoc on the body. They cause oxidative stress and damage, ultimately damaging cells and expediting the aging process. Free radicals can also catalyze chronic health problems and worsen existing ones. Cysteine targets these radicals and supports long-term antioxidant capacity by improving glutathione levels. Cysteine is also effective for reducing inflammation, particularly when caused by exercise-induced free radicals.
Cysteine is an important sulfur source in the body. Numerous bodily functions rely on sulfur, including synthesizing proteins, regulating gene expression, and synthesizing and repairing DNA. The body also needs cysteine for proper immune function, as it stimulates the cells that naturally protect the body against infectious invaders. Cysteine supports liver health, too. It is a potent heavy metal chelator that can bind to cadmium, lead, and mercury to eliminate them from the body. Animal and human studies report that cysteine also helps reduce the damage caused by alcohol and reduces hangover symptoms.
Cysteine supplements may cause dizziness, headache, or nausea in some individuals. However, taking cysteine with food can mitigate or reduce these effects. Individuals taking immunosuppressants should consult a physician before taking cysteine. Individuals with heart conditions should not take cysteine, as it may increase homocysteine over time.
