HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate) is a highly bioavailable metabolite of leucine, a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) that is essential for protein synthesis and muscle repair. Calcium HMB is a calcium salt form of HMB that reduces muscle protein breakdown. The body can synthesize HMB while metabolizing leucine, but it does so in very small amounts. Clinical studies have shown that calcium HMB supplements can significantly reduce muscle fatigue and the catabolic breakdown of muscle tissue that accompanies strenuous exercise, intense bodybuilding workouts, or muscle trauma.
HMB is a popular ergogenic supplement that enhances athleticism. Numerous studies have examined HMB’s effects on exercise performance. Clinical trials have reported that healthy adults taking HMB supplements experience improvements in muscle gain from exercise, overall strength, and lean body mass.
Calcium HMB is an anti-catabolic compound that inhibits the breakdown of muscle proteins. On a gram-per-gram basis, HMB dramatically outperforms leucine as an anti-catabolic agent. Athletes may benefit from this in several ways. For example, athletes often consume calorie-restricted diets following a bulking phase. However, the body doesn’t limit weight loss to fat. It can also target muscle tissue, but taking an anti-catabolic like calcium HMB can preserve muscle mass.
A 12-week clinical trial showed that calcium HMB improved aerobic exercise capacity and anaerobic power—the max amount of power an individual can exert when performing high-intensity workouts—compared to a placebo. Researchers also noted a reduction in body fat. A different 12-week study reported similar findings with significant increases in aerobic and anaerobic exercise capacity compared to the placebo group. Both studies focused on highly trained athletes and imply calcium HMB has the potential to improve exercise adaptation in the long term.
Athletes and fitness enthusiasts put their bodies through a lot to gain muscle. Muscle injuries, although unwanted, are common. Muscle soreness is also typical following intense exercise. Scientific studies show that HMB supplements dramatically reduce muscle damage markers and promote better recovery. They also reduce markers of inflammation.
HMB supplements are likely safe for most individuals, as HMB is a metabolite of leucine—an essential amino acid that the body needs to sustain life. Rarely, some people may experience HMB side effects like constipation, stomachache, or itching.
