Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan and abbreviated to HA, is a significant component of connective tissues, joint and tendon tissues, and the synovial fluid that reduces friction between the joints. It binds cells together to improve cartilage’s resilience against compression and helps lubricate the joints. It also helps connected tissues slide between neighboring muscles.
Hyaluronic acid’s role in skin appearance is one of its better-known functions. It plays a role in the body’s inflammation response to help regenerate skin tissues and repair wounds. It can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water, which is why it gives the skin a supple and hydrated appearance. Naturally occurring hyaluronic acid levels decrease in the skin with age, which contributes to sagging and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is water-soluble and forms a gel-like substance when combined with water.
Hyaluronic acid supports joint health in several ways. It makes up a significant portion of the synovial fluid that lubricates joints to reduce friction. Hyaluronic acid also helps joints resist compression by coating cartilage in a protective layer. It also lubricates connective tissues to allow the tissues and muscles to slide over each other more easily. It also synergizes without joint health supplements, including glucosamine and chondroitin.
Hyaluronic acid levels increase following skin damage to expedite the wound healing process. It helps regulate the body’s inflammatory response and promotes red blood cell production around the injured area. It has analgesic and antibacterial properties, which help reduce pain and the risk of infection. It can also reduce the size of wounds for faster recovery.
Hyaluronic acid is a significant component of skin. Research shows that oral hyaluronic acid solutions help improve the appearance of skin. One study noted that participants taking an oral HA solution saw significant improvements in skin elasticity and hydration. The participants also experienced a notable reduction in skin roughness and the appearance of wrinkles. HA may help improve the appearance of acne, too. Hyaluronic acid helps support the body’s skin barrier, which may reduce the irritation and redness caused by acne.
Only dissolved hyaluronic acid powder in cold water when preparing this Hyaluronic Acid 1% solution. Never attempt to dissolve Hyaluronic Acid in hot or room temperature water.

The hyaluronic acid clumps will turn clear and begin to dissolve after 4-8 hours. It takes approximately 12-24 hours for all the clumps to dissolve and the water to thicken into a 1% hyaluronic acid serum. The solution has a viscosity between maple syrup and honey but is still pourable.
For internal use: One ounce equals approximately 150 milligrams of Hyaluronic Acid.
Store the hyaluronic acid solution in the refrigerator to preserve the quality and maximize its shelf-life. Hyaluronic acid solution lasts a minimum of 48 to 72 hours in the refrigerator. However, it can last longer so long as the HA solution remains sterile. Microbial contamination causes spoilage and reduces the solution’s thickness. If the solution becomes thin or loses its thickness, discard it. Changes in viscosity indicate spoilage. Do not attempt to store your HA solution at room temperature without the addition of preservatives.
Hyaluronic acid and vitamin C complement each other’s skin-enhancing properties. They work together to lock in moisture, protect the skin, and improve signs of aging skin.
Adding preservatives like ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or DMAE bitartrate can prolong the HA solution’s shelf-life in the refrigerator and reduce the likelihood of microbial contamination. Choosing a storage container with a dropper or a pump to dispense the serum also helps prevent contamination.
Add and dissolve approximately 6 grams of Ascorbic Acid and 3 grams of DMAE Bitartrate to 12 fluid ounces of distilled water at room temperature. After both powders dissolve completely, chill the 12 fluid ounces to 39°F (4°C) (check with a wide-range cooking thermometer). After completing the preservative solution, skip steps 1-3 for the hyaluronic acid solution recipe listed above, and begin with step 4 directly. The preservative solution replaces the 12 fluid ounces of cold distilled water and is already at the necessary temperature (39°F or 4°C).

This hyaluronic acid solution can last 1-3 months with the addition of vitamin C. If the mixture starts to turn yellow, it means the vitamin C has oxidized. Once this happens, the solution is less effective and prone to contamination. Discard any yellowing solution and make a new batch. If this recipe yields too much product to use before the solution oxidizes, adjust the recipe as needed to make the preferred amount of solution.
