Inositol hexaphosphate is a derivative of inositol (Vitamin B8), a water-soluble nutrient that supports the formation and maintenance of healthy cells.
Inositol is important as a derivative of cell membrane compounds, such as phosphatidylinositol, as well as a number of signaling and secondary messenger molecules. Inositol was formerly classified as a vitamin but was discovered to be a non-essential nutrient because it can be synthesized by intestinal bacteria within the body from glucose.
Inositol hexaphosphate is the principal storage form of phosphorus in many plant tissues, especially bran and seeds. It is known as IP6, phytic acid or as phytate when in salt form.
