What is Pomegranate Extract?

Pomegranates are round fruits with a sponge-like mesocarp membrane inside. They have a reddish-purple husk and contain hundreds of similar-colored, juice-packed seeds called arils. The number of arils ranges from 200 to 1400 per fruit. The juice from the seeds is so pigmented that it can stain clothing permanently.

The name pomegranate comes from the medieval Latin words pōmum grānātum meaning apple with many seeds. Grānātum also reflects the pomegranate’s color as it translates to “of a dark red color.” This dual translation eventually gave garnet gemstones their name. The Old French pronunciation of grānātum transposed the sounds to make the new word grenat, which eventually became garnet.

PureBulk’s pomegranate extract comes from the dried peel (hull) of the fruit. It is a rich source of ellagic acid antioxidants and contains at least 90% ellagic acid.

What is Ellagic Acid?

Pomegranates are rich in ellagitannin polyphenols, also known as punicalagins, which the body metabolizes into ellagic acid antioxidants. Ellagic acid owes its name to the French term acide ellagique. It is a reversal of the word galle and a reference to plant galls that contain high levels of ellagic acid. The spelling change was also necessary to avoid confusing ellagic acid with the French term for gallic acid, acide gallique. The combination of low pH levels and high polyphenol levels gives pomegranates their tart flavor.

Potential Benefits of Pomegranate Extract (90% Ellagic Acid)

Pomegranate Extract Antioxidants

Antioxidants are necessary to scavenge and neutralize free radicals before they can cause damage throughout the body. Although they are a necessary component of many biological processes and reactions, they can cause or worsen chronic health conditions and lead to premature aging when they outnumber antioxidants. Ellagic acid antioxidants scavenge free radicals, prevent free radicals from damaging fatty acids and lipids, and inhibit unhealthy cells from proliferating.

Pomegranate Extract and Inflammation

Free radicals cause oxidative stress and damage that are often at the root of chronic inflammation. The body uses inflammation as the first line of defense in the immune response. However, long-term inflammation injures healthy cells and damages DNA. Much like free radical imbalances, prolonged inflammation also contributes to chronic health problems. Animal studies have shown that ellagitannins and pomegranate extract are useful for reducing inflammation. Additionally, both in vitro and in vivo studies show that pomegranate extract exerts anti-inflammatory effects. Research also reports that pomegranate compounds can reduce numerous inflammation biomarkers. Reducing inflammation can support several other areas of health. For example, less inflammation may reduce plaque buildup in the arteries, enhance artery function, and provide neuroprotective effects.

Pomegranate Benefits for Skin

Free radicals can age skin prematurely. UV rays promote oxidative stress, oxidative damage, free radical activity, and photodamage. Excess sun exposure can also cause unwanted skin pigmentation. Pomegranate extract contains antioxidants that neutralize these UV radicals, act as a barrier against UV rays, enhance the skin’s ability to resist UVB ray damage, and improve the appearance of skin hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure.

Pomegranate Health Benefits for Exercise Endurance

Pomegranate extract may benefit individuals looking to increase their exercise endurance. Research shows that participants taking pomegranate extract were able to increase how long they could work out before fatiguing. One study reported that participants taking pomegranate extract prior to exercising experienced a 12% increase in time to exhaustion. Pomegranate extract also improved exercise recovery in a different study.

Potential Side Effects of Pomegranate Extract

Most individuals can take pomegranate extract without experiencing adverse effects, and pomegranate extract research has not reported any side effects. However, ellagic acid may interact with blood thinners, statins, or antipsychotics. Individuals taking these medications should consult with a physician before taking pomegranate extract.
