What is L-Serine?

L-Serine is the dietary source of the nonessential amino acid D-serine. However, serine’s nonessential status is conditional, as certain circumstances prevent the body from producing enough of it. The enzyme serine racemase converts oral L-Serine into D-Serine, which acts as a neuromodulator and helps build proteins. Serine is critical for cognitive function, brain health, and the body’s antioxidant capacity.

As cofactors of serine, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and magnesium increase the rate of serine racemization by 5- to 10-fold. L-Serine is also essential for the body to synthesize phosphatidylserine, a lipid that supports cell membrane structure and cognitive health. It is a precursor to several amino acids too, including cysteine, tryptophan, and glycine.

Potential L-Serine Benefits

L-Serine supports cognitive function in several ways. It exerts neuroprotective effects against β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (L-BMAA), a neurotoxin that attacks nerve tissue. It also plays a role in the unfolded protein response (UPR). The UPR is a reaction to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which misfolds and damages proteins. The UPR attempts to correct the protein folds but will trigger apoptosis (cell death) if the damage is too great. L-Serine influences the UPR to favor the recovery process.

L-Serine supplements may improve memory formation. L-Serine helps reduce the buildup of certain proteins that damage cognitive function. It also activates NMDA receptors, which boost memory and long-term potentiation (LTP). Serine also enhances the effects of other compounds that bind to NMDA receptors, such as glutamate.

L-Serine provides potential antioxidant benefits as well. It is a precursor to several proteins, lipids, and amino acids that act as antioxidants against free radicals. Serine modulates the body’s antioxidant capacity, which further enhances its ability to scavenge free radicals.

Potential L-Serine Side Effects

L-Serine side effects are rare. Some individuals may experience nausea, upset stomach, or vomiting, but this is uncommon with standard dosages.
