Green Tea Extract Powder (50% Polyphenols) is a green tea extract. It comes from the green tea plant Camellia sinensis and produces several types of tea. Green tea, unlike other teas, such as black tea or oolong, is not fermented. As a result, green tea extract retains a large amount of the original polyphenols found in the plant. Polyphenols, such as catechins, are antioxidants that support healthy cell structure. Green tea extract may also support heart health, exercise performance, and weight loss.
PureBulk’s Green Tea Extract Powder contains at least 50% polyphenols and 30% catechins.
Unlike other fermented teas, green tea extract retains its polyphenols. Most of these polyphenols are flavonols known as catechins. Catechins are powerful antioxidants that protect against free radicals and oxidative stress. When radicals outnumber antioxidants, they can damage cells, cause premature aging, and produce or worsen numerous chronic ailments. Green tea catechins work alongside other antioxidant compounds to enhance the body’s antioxidant defenses. Research also shows that green tea polyphenols outperform other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. Additionally, polyphenols help boost levels of other potent antioxidants like glutathione.
Oxidative stress damages heart health in several ways. It can increase fat buildup in the blood, cause inflammation in the arteries, and elevate blood pressure. Green tea extract antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties to counteract this. They also may reduce cholesterol and triglyceride accumulation by blocking cells from absorbing them. Green tea extracts also have a mechanism that can stop squalene from converting into cholesterol. Additionally, green tea promotes vasodilation for better blood flow.
Green tea antioxidants serve numerous functions, including a potential boost to exercise performance. They inhibit the oxidative damage that causes muscle fatigue and may expedite exercise recovery. Several studies have reported that green tea extract improved antioxidant protection during strength training and sprinting. Other research noted that participants experienced a 10.9% increase in their running distance after four weeks of taking green tea extract compared to those taking a placebo.
Green tea extract may support weight loss efforts when combined with caffeine. The two supplements synergize to boost thermogenesis, which enhances the number of calories the body burns when generating body heat and digesting meals. One clinical trial reported an increase of 179 calories burned over the course of the day when participants took green tea extract with caffeine. However, the researchers noted these effects were more pronounced in non-habitual caffeine consumers.
The National Institute of Health considers green tea likely safe for most adults. Consuming excessive amounts may cause alertness, over-stimulation, and insomnia due to the low caffeine concentrations in green tea. Although rare, long-term high doses may damage the liver.
