What is Ajuga Turkesterone?
Ajuga Turkesterone is a naturally occurring phytoecdysteroid — a type of plant-based steroid-like compound — most notably extracted from the herb Ajuga turkestanica. Also known as Turkistan Bugleweed, Ajuga turkestanica is a perennial plant native to Central Asia (including Uzbekistan) that grows at higher elevations. The Ajuga turkestanica plant contains several bioactive ecdysteroids (including turkesterone and 20-hydroxyecdysone) that contribute to its traditional uses for muscle and heart support in local folk remedies.
From a biochemical perspective, turkesterone is structurally similar to insect molting hormones (ecdysteroids), but in humans, it differs from androgens or synthetic anabolic steroids. Its proposed mechanisms involve signaling pathways (such as PI3K/Akt/mTOR) rather than direct binding to classical androgen receptors. PureBulk standardizes its Ajuga Turkesterone supplements to a 10% extract to deliver a measurable and consistent concentration.
Potential Ajuga Turkesterone Benefits
- Anabolic (muscle-building) properties:Several animal and in vitro studies show that turkesterone and related phytoecdysteroids may increase protein synthesis, muscle mass, and strength. For example, turkesterone in rodent models elevated total protein content, lean tissue mass, and engaged signaling pathways associated with muscle growth.
- Adaptogenic/performance support:Adaptogens are natural substances, often derived from plants, that help the body cope with stress (physical and mental) and support resilience. Historically, individuals used the Ajuga turkestanica plant in folk remedies for muscle aches, stomach issues, and heart support. Plants that contain ecdysteroids function as adaptogens by enhancing the immune system and increasing the body’s resilience against infections and environmental stressors.
- Muscle growth and athletic performance:Ajuga turkesterone supplements may support lean muscle growth and enhance athletic performance. Turkesterone acts as a non-hormonal anabolic agent, influencing protein synthesis pathways to increase muscle mass and strength. For instance, one study found that Ajuga turkestanica improved grip strength when combined with resistance exercise.
- Metabolic/recovery support:Research shows that phytoecdysteroids help regulate lipid accumulation, improve protein synthesis, and support recovery from exercise-induced muscle stress.
Potential Ajuga Turkesterone Side Effects
Ajuga turkesterone has a favorable safety profile compared to synthetic anabolic agents, as it is a non-hormonal compound that does not appear to suppress natural testosterone or cause common androgenic side effects, such as acne or hormonal imbalances. Adverse effects are rare and usually limited to mild, temporary gastrointestinal discomfort or nausea, especially when taken on an empty stomach. As always, individuals should consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
