What is Astragalus Root (Huang Qi)?

Astragalus Root, also known as Huang Qi in traditional Chinese herbal remedies, comes from Astragalus membranaceus, a leguminous plant native to northern China and Mongolia. Traditional Chinese cultures have used it for over two thousand years to tonify qi—the body’s vital energy—and to strengthen resistance to stress and illness.

Modern extraction techniques now allow researchers to concentrate specific bioactive compounds from the root, notably polysaccharides, flavonoids, and saponins (such as astragalosides). PureBulk’s 70% polysaccharides extract standardizes those antioxidant constituents for consistent potency.

Potential Astragalus Root Benefits

Adaptogenic and Immune Support Astragalus is an adaptogenic substance that helps the body maintain equilibrium during physical or emotional stress. Astragalus polysaccharides modulate immune function by supporting macrophage, T-cell, and natural-killer-cell activity—essential components of the innate immune response.

Cellular Protection and Antioxidant Defense Astragalus polysaccharides scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and help neutralize oxidative stress that contributes to premature cellular aging. They also strengthen antioxidant defenses that support cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic health.

Healthy Aging and Telomere Maintenance Research shows that Astragalus compounds—particularly astragaloside IV—may activate the enzyme telomerase, which helps preserve chromosome integrity during cell division. Though more research is needed, this mechanism links Astragalus to longevity and age-defense research.

Metabolic and Cardiovascular Support Astragalus root supports cardiovascular health through multiple pathways. Its polysaccharides and active components, such as astragaloside IV and total flavonoids, work to protect blood vessels and improve heart function. By supporting endothelial function and moderating inflammatory signaling, astragalus may promote healthy circulation, support glucose metabolism, and help improve key metrics such as LDL cholesterol and vascular pressure.

Potential Astragalus Root Side Effects

Most individuals tolerate astragalus root supplements without experiencing significant adverse effects. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as a runny nose, itching, bloating, or nausea. Individuals with autoimmune conditions should consult a physician before taking astragalus root supplements, as astragalus may stimulate the immune system. Additionally, astragalus may interact with immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or medications affecting blood sugar or blood pressure.
