Calcium D-Glucarate, also known as calcium saccharate and saccharated lime, is a calcium salt combined with glucaric acid. The addition of glucaric acid dramatically improves the calcium’s oral bioavailability. Once ingested, stomach acids break down calcium D-glucarate into calcium and D-glucaric acid. Calcium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that the body needs to maintain the circulatory, digestive, and muscular systems. It is also critical for bone formation, blood cell function, muscle contractions, and nerve conduction.
Glucaric acid occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables, including apples, grapefruits, oranges, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. D-glucarate has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help rid the body of toxins and support the body’s natural defense systems. Glucaric acid also helps remove excess estrogen. Additionally, calcium D-glucarate exerts beneficial effects on cholesterol levels.
Calcium D-glucarate may support liver health due to its detoxification properties. The liver goes through two phases of detoxing harmful substances. The first phase can sometimes produce metabolites that are more noxious than the original compounds. The second phase targets these metabolites for elimination in a process known as glucuronidation. Phase II detoxification also processes harmful metabolic byproducts, hormones, and medications.
Glucuronidation neutralizes these toxins by binding them to glucuronic acid. The body can then excrete them through the gut or kidneys via bile, bowel movements, and urine. However, beta-glucuronidase enzymes found in the gut can reverse glucuronidation and cause the body to reabsorb the toxins the liver tried to eliminate.
