Product Details

What is Coenzyme Q10 (Coq10)?

Coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10) is a quinone, a substance that aids in providing energy to cells in all oxygen-breathing organisms. Researchers first discovered CoQ10 in 1957, naming it ubiquinone - the quinone found in every cell of the body (ubi = everywhere). Ubiquinones are lipophilic, water-insoluble substances that deliver electrical charges to the mitochondria, or powerhouses of the cells, to produce energy and sustain life. CoQ10 plays an important role as the coenzyme for at least three mitochondrial enzymes (complexes I, II and III) as well as enzymes in other parts of the cell.

Coenzyme Q10 is a pseudo vitamin that acts as a coenzyme in the body to facilitate a variety of critical functions. CoQ10 is crucial to synthesis adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which serves as the primary energy source for cells. ATP drives a number of biological processes including muscle contraction and the production of protein. Coenzyme Q10 is also a powerful antioxidant that supports a robust immune system.

Reindeer, beef, and pork hearts are the richest sources of CoQ10, followed by oily fish. About a hundred different food sources can provide CoQ10, but it is difficult to get a significant serving with some of the more appetizing ones.

Potential Coenzyme Q10 Benefits

Coenzyme Q10 as an Antioxidant

CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and protects the body from free radicals, compounds that can damage cell membranes. CoQ10 also protects cells from oxidative damage. As we age, particularly after age 30, CoQ10 levels begin to drop, leaving the body more susceptible to free radical damage. CoQ10 supplements may improve the appearance of skin by promoting antioxidant activity and reducing the damage of environmental factors like UV ray exposure.

Coenzyme Q10 for Heart Health

Coenzyme Q10 improves circulation throughout the body and helps mitochondria process fat and cholesterol more efficiently. It heightens the levels of blood and oxygen available for the heart to use. CoQ10 also supports heart health by reducing oxidative damage and maintaining optimal cellular energy. Taking CoQ10 with at least 600-800 IU of vitamin E daily, along with vitamin C and niacin, helps to optimize its usefulness.

CoQ10 Supplement Synergy

CoQ10 synergizes well with alpha lipoic acid, l-carnitine, and creatine, as they all play a role in metabolizing energy.

CoQ10 Benefits for Men

Fertility levels decrease with age, with a notable decline starting at the age of 30. CoQ10 supplements exert antioxidant effects that protect sperm from free radical damage. Studies have also shown that Coenzyme Q10 boosts sperm concentrations and motility.

CoQ10 Benefits for Women

Coenzyme Q10 can support fertility in women as well. The body is less able to protect eggs from oxidative damage over time. Taking CoQ10 supplements increases the body’s antioxidant defenses, which may improve the quality of eggs.

Potential Side Effects of Coenzyme Q10 (Coq10)

Coenzyme Q10 appears to be generally safe with no significant side effects. No serious toxicity associated with the use of coenzyme Q10 has been reported. Do not exceed 800 mg per day.

Coenzyme Q10 may interact with some blood pressure medications and some blood thinners. Customers taking medication to lower blood pressure or thin the blood should consult their physician before taking CoQ10.

Certain medications appear to deplete the body stores of CoQ10. These medications include statins, fibric acid derivatives, beta blockers, and tricyclic antidepressants. Individuals taking these types of medications should talk to their doctor about whether Coenzyme Q10 supplementation is right for them.

Many countries (including Japan, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, and Canada) classify CoQ10 as a prescription drug. In the United States, CoQ10 is considered a natural supplement and is a main constituent of many supplements that are available over the counter.

Bioavailability, Mixing, and Solubility of Coenzyme Q10 (Coq10)

Coenzyme Q10 is a very large molecule with hydrophobic properties that affect the absorption rate. Very little is absorbed if it is just taken directly in powder form or as a powder in capsules. Individuals can improve the assimilation and absorption of Coenzyme Q-10 by taking it with a fatty substance, such as oil, peanut butter, or olive oil. Subsequently, Coenzyme Q10 oral supplements are commonly sold as gel caps dissolved in soybean oil. While this delivery method improves absorption, PureBulk suggests the recipe below to increase the bioavailability/absorption of Coenzyme Q10 for individuals who avoid soy.

Coconut Q10 (Coenzyme Q10 & Coconut Oil Recipe for Increased Bioavailability)

  1. Heat 16 fluid ounces coconut oil to between 150°F (65°C) and 158°F (70°C) in a sauce pan on the stove. (if the oil isn't the right temperature the powder will not fully dissolve)
  2. Add 25 grams Coenzyme Q10 powder. The powder will melt instantly and dissolve into the hot oil.
  3. Stir for one minute.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool to between 80°F (27°C) and 90°F (32°C).
  5. Pour mixture into a rigid plastic or glass resealable food storage container and allow to cool to room temperature.
  6. At below 76°F (24.4°C) coconut oil will turn solid, but that's alright.
  7. The blended oil should be kept sealed; refrigeration is optional.
  8. A level half teaspoon of this oil in its liquid or solid state will net approximately 130 milligrams Co-enzyme Q10, which is a typical serving size for this most bio-available form of CoQ10.
  9. Do not exceed a serving size of 1 level teaspoon (260 milligrams) of the blended Coenzyme Q10 coconut oil per day unless otherwise directed by a physician.
  10. Take CoQ10 preferably with a fatty food at mealtime. You may spread it on toast or add it to any food like you would as if it were butter.

This 16 fluid ounce recipe will net 96 level teaspoons, which yields a 6-month supply of this highly bio-available Coenzyme Q10 dissolved in coconut oil.

When to Take CoQ10: Morning or Night?

CopQ10 may interfere with sleep if taken too close to bedtime. To avoid sleep disruptions, take CoQ10 supplements in the morning or early afternoon with a meal.

How to Store CoQ10 Supplements

In its crystalline form, Coenzyme-Q10 is extremely susceptible to oxidation, a chemical reaction with the oxygen in air. If kept in contact with air, CoQ10 will change from its usual bright orange color to a dark brown color and will lose potency.

The best way to keep Coenzyme-Q10 from oxidizing is to solubilize the powder (see the Coenzyme Q10 & Coconut Oil recipe above). Coconut oil usually contains up to 40% medium chain triglycerides that act as natural antioxidant oils and protect Coenzyme Q10 from oxidation.
