Product Details

What is Coleus Forskohlii?

Coleus forskohlii comes from the Coleus barbatus plant that grows in tropical and subtropical regions of India and east Africa. It is an ayurvedic herb that belongs to the mint family Lamiaceae. Coleus has a complex taxonomy history and goes by many names. Botanists first described the plant in 1810 and named it Plectranthus barbatus. However, they then shifted it to the Coleus genus by 1830.

The term forskohlii came from a different plant named Plectranthus forskaolaei, which was synonymous with Coleus hadiensis. Botanists spelled the epithet forskålaei numerous ways, including forskolaei, forskalei, and forskohlii. Outside of botany, coleus forskohlii goes by pashanabhedi, Indian coleus, makandi, mao hou qiao rui hua, boldo brasileiro, and boldo gaúcho.

Ayurvedic remedies used coleus forskohlii for a variety of cardiovascular, central nervous system, gastrointestinal, and respiratory ailments. Teas brewed from the herb contain rosmarinic acid and flavonoids that have antioxidant and anti-cholinesterase properties. Forskolin is the primary bioactive compound in coleus forskohlii and derives its name from the incorrect binomial nomenclature of coleus forskohlii.

Forskolin increases cellular levels of an enzyme called cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate). cAMP is a secondary messenger important in many biological processes and can promote healthy cells. It is derived from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and used for intracellular signal transduction in many different organisms, conveying the cAMP-dependent pathway. Through forskolin, Coleus forskohlii supplementation may increase testosterone, reduce inflammation, and safeguard against free radical damage. It is also a popular weight loss aid.

Potential Forskolin Benefits

Forskolin + Weight Loss

Forskolin may promote weight loss due to its effects on fat metabolism. It stimulates the production of lipase enzymes, which help move stored triglycerides and release fatty acids for use as energy. These processes break down fats and diminish the overall size of fat cells. However, forskolin can’t burn fat on its own. Individuals must pair it with a calorie deficit, either through diet, exercise, or both. One clinical trial found that overweight men and men with obesity taking coleus forskohlii experienced significant reductions in body fat percentage and fat mass over a 12-week period. They also had notable increases in lean body mass and testosterone levels. Another 12-week study reported that coleus forskohlii extract prevented weight gain in overweight women.

More Ayurvedic Herbs

PureBulk carries numerous ayurvedic herbs. These supplements aim to protect and maintain health and wellness.

Forskolin + Lean Muscle Growth

Researchers believe, in part, that coleus forskohlii promotes weight loss while preserving muscle because testosterone promotes the release of fat from fat cells and lean muscle growth. It also promotes muscle protein synthesis by stimulating adenylyl cyclase activity in muscles. Adenylyl cyclase is the only enzyme that can synthesize cyclic AMP (cAMP) from adenosine triphosphate (ATP). cAMP increases the rate of fat loss by regulating glycogen, sugar, and fat metabolism and enhancing the effects of other fat burners. It also plays a role in muscle growth and regeneration.

Other Potential Coleus Forskohlii Benefits

Coleus forskohlii exerts anti-inflammatory effects in the airways of the lungs by inhibiting macrophage activation, which helps relieve cough and other bronchial symptoms caused by inflammation in the lungs. It also has antioxidant properties similar to that of vitamin E. It may also support heart health, as it helps relax smooth muscles, promotes vasodilation, and has a positive inotropic effect on the heart. Positive inotropes help heart muscles contract more strongly for a more powerful heartbeat.
