Product Details

What is CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)?

Linoleic acid is the most common omega-6 fatty acid and one of two essential fatty acids that humans need for life. However, the body can’t produce it innately and relies on dietary sources to meet its nutritional needs. The typical American diet provides less than 1 gram of conjugated linoleic acid a day. High-fat meats like ground beef, lamb, and full-fat dairy products have the highest natural amounts of CLA. Oddly enough, the processed food Cheese Whiz is particularly high in CLA.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is an umbrella term for a family of linoleic acid isomers. The various isomers exert different effects, but much of the CLA research focuses on the cis9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 isomers. CLA is a conjugated form of linoleic acid that contains a double bond. This bond can arrange itself in several ways, resulting in 28 variations of CLA. Researchers believe much of CLA’s potential benefits are due to its conjugated nature.

Potential CLA Benefits

CLA & Weight Loss

CLA supplements may support weight loss efforts. Animal research shows that CLA supplements reduce body fat through several mechanisms, including a reduction of food intake, prevention of fat production, stimulation of fat breakdown, and an increase in fat burn. Numerous randomized controlled trials report that CLA supplements also promote fat loss and muscle growth in humans for an improved body composition.

CLA & Exercise Performance

Both animal and human studies indicate CLA supplements containing trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomers may improve exercise performance. Researchers found that CLA supplements enhance fat oxidation during exercise, which improves endurance. CLA supplements also influence energy metabolism. Muscles rely on ample glycogen stores for energy during exercise. The trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomers reduce how much stored glycogen the body uses during workouts, thus preserving these vital glycogen stores for greater endurance.

Potential CLA Side Effects

The FDA categorizes CLA as generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Some individuals may experience stomach upset when they take extremely high quantities of the supplement. Clinical studies have reported mixed results as to whether CLA increases insulin resistance and induces an inflammatory response in obese people. Individuals who are diabetic and overweight should consult a physician before taking CLA supplements.

Purity and Concentration of Conjugated Linoleic Acid Oil Softgels

PureBulk’s conjugated linoleic acid oil softgel (gelatin) capsules contain no fillers or additives. Each softgel contains 1000 mg conjugated linoleic acid oil derived from safflower seed oil. These softgels contain at least 80% of the essential CLA components, with the trans-10, cis-12 isomer accounting for 40% and the cis-9 trans-11 isomer for 9%.

Keep conjugated linoleic acid oil softgels in an airtight, cool, dry, and dark location. For best results, refrigerate after opening.

How to Take Conjugated Linoleic Acid Oil Softgels

Individuals should take 1-2 CLA capsules 2-3 times a day with meals. Individual needs vary.
