DMAE bitartrate, also known as Dimethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethyl-2-aminoethanol and Deanol, is a naturally occurring compound that may improve memory, attention, and mood by stimulating cholinergic receptors and elevating acetylcholine levels. Combining DMAE with bitartrate improves its stability.
Potential DMAE Benefits
DMAE and Cognition
Many individuals regard DMAE supplements as a nootropic agent that enhances memory and cognitive function. DMAE increases the availability of choline by blocking cells from taking up choline. The brain can then use the increased choline to synthesize acetylcholine, which may improve memory and learning. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that plays a critical role in attention, memory, motivation, and arousal. It helps the brain store memories and focus on tasks. It also boosts mental sharpness and clarity.
DMAE also has antioxidant properties that may support long-term cognitive health by scavenging free radicals. Anecdotal evidence notes that DMAE supplements significantly improve concentration, mood, energy, and sleep patterns.
Potential DMAE Side Effects
DMAE does not typically cause side effects when taken at the recommended doses. Taking too much DMAE can cause headaches, tense muscles, and sleep disturbances. Individuals with epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia should not take DMAE supplements. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not take DMAE supplements. DMAE may interact with blood thinners and medications that affect acetylcholine. These include galantamine, donepezil, anticholinergics, cholinergics, and certain anticoagulants.
DMAE for Lucid Dreaming
Many individuals report experiencing lucid dreams when taking nootropics. Lucid dreaming occurs when the sleeping individual realizes they are in a dream and may be able to control the progression of the dream. One study confirmed that DMAE effectively induces lucid dreaming.
DMAE works best when taken with a choline supplement, as it inhibits choline metabolism. Pairing DMAE with a choline supplement also helps maximize its effects. PureBulk carries choline l-bitartrate and alpha GPC.
