What is Fisetin?
Fisetin is a botanical flavanol and provides yellow pigment for a variety of fruits and vegetables. Botanical antioxidants have garnered a lot of interest, as individuals can consume them for long stretches of time without experiencing negative effects. Fisetin is a potent antioxidant with senolytic effects, meaning it might improve longevity and lifelong health. It’s also a neuroprotector and anti-inflammatory agent. Animal and in vitro studies show great promise for fisetin, and several human clinical trials are underway.
Potential Fisetin Benefits
Longevity
Fisetin may be able to improve longevity and lifelong health by removing senescent cells. These cells stop dividing, which damages them and triggers the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Eliminating senescent cells can improve cell functioning, long-term health, and reduce inflammation. Fisetin kills these harmful cells while leaving healthy cells intact.
Antioxidant
Fisetin exerts antioxidant effects by scavenging free radicals and increasing the availability of other potent antioxidants. It also blocks the NF-kB signaling pathway. NF-kB proteins trigger the production of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. It also prevents inflammatory enzymes from damaging fatty acids. Fisetin enhances cellular metabolism and improves longevity by removing metabolic waste from cells.
Cognition and Neuroprotection
Fisetin may improve memory and learning by activating long-term memory pathways in the brain. It also provides neuroprotection by blocking inflammatory molecules that target the brain’s innate immune system. Fisetin may help reduce plaque buildup in brain cells and preserve existing cells.
Other Fisetin Benefits
Fisetin supplements may support heart and liver health. Its antioxidant properties allow it to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, both of which damage organ tissues. Fisetin may support strong bones too. It interferes with the activity of cells that weaken bones and may improve bone density.
Fisetin vs. Quercetin
Fisetin isn’t the only beneficial plant flavonoid. Resveratrol and quercetin are also botanic flavanols with powerful antioxidant properties. All three compounds are fat-soluble, and taking them with fats like fish oil may improve their bioavailability. One study comparing ten different flavonoids’ senolytic potential reported that fisetin was the most effective.
Potential Fisetin Side Effects
Animal studies have not identified any notable side effects of fisetin supplements. One human study reported that fisetin caused mild stomach discomfort. However, the placebo group also had the same complaint. The participants all had a pre-existing health condition that was more likely the cause of their stomach aches.
Fisetin may interfere with certain blood thinners and blood sugar-reducing medications. Consult a physician before taking fisetin supplements.
