What is Goji Berry?

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum), also known as wolfberry, is a small, crimson fruit native to the Himalayan regions of China and Tibet. It has featured prominently in TCM for well over 2,000 years to nourish the liver, brighten the eyes, and strengthen the kidneys’ vital essence. Ancient Chinese cultures associated the goji berry with longevity—a reputation so enduring it appears in classical texts and is still widely embraced today.

The berry’s remarkable nutritional density includes Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) along with zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, betaine, flavonoids, and vitamins C and B2. PureBulk standardizes this extract to 50% polysaccharides, providing reliable, high-potency benefits that include antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective support.

Potential Goji Berry Benefits

Powerful Antioxidant Activity

Goji berries rank among the most antioxidant-rich foods ever measured. The combination of LBPs, zeaxanthin, and polyphenols contributes to measurable reductions in oxidative stress markers in clinical settings. A placebo-controlled study published in Optometry and Vision Science demonstrated that daily supplementation with goji berries significantly increased plasma zeaxanthin and antioxidant levels while reducing oxidative stress biomarkers. These effects have far-reaching implications for cellular aging and the risk of developing chronic health conditions.

Eye Health and Vision Protection

Goji berries are one of the richest known dietary sources of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that accumulates in the macula of the human eye. Zeaxanthin acts as a natural filter against two of the primary drivers of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): high-energy blue light and free radical damage. Multiple clinical studies have confirmed that supplementation with LBPs significantly elevates macular pigment optical density (MPOD), a protective marker for long-term retinal health. These goji berry benefits for eye health represent some of the strongest evidence in the scientific literature for this botanical.

Immune System Support

LBPs have demonstrated significant immunomodulatory effects in both preclinical and clinical research. Randomized controlled trials have found that goji berry supplementation increases the activity of lymphocytes, elevates immunoglobulin levels, and boosts CD4+ T-cell counts in aging adults. These findings suggest that regular intake of a goji berry supplement may meaningfully contribute to adaptive immune resilience, particularly in populations with age-related immune decline.

Longevity and Healthy Aging

Traditional cultures have long associated Goji berries with longevity, and contemporary research has begun to examine the molecular underpinnings of this reputation. LBPs appear to activate longevity-associated pathways such as SIRT1 and FOXO, reduce markers of cellular senescence, and protect mitochondrial integrity. In animal models, LBP supplementation reportedly extended lifespan and reduced age-related organ deterioration. While human longevity data remain preliminary, the mechanistic evidence is encouraging.

Neuroprotection and Cognitive Support

LBPs have shown neuroprotective potential in multiple preclinical studies, demonstrating an ability to reduce neuronal apoptosis, decrease amyloid-beta accumulation, and protect against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Researchers believe LBPs’ antioxidant properties and their influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression mediate these effects.

Liver Protection

Consistent with TCM’s classification of goji berry as a liver-nourishing herb, several studies have documented hepatoprotective properties of LBPs. Betaine, a naturally occurring compound in the berry, contributes to liver fat metabolism and may help reduce hepatic steatosis. Preclinical research has demonstrated reductions in liver enzyme elevations, oxidative liver damage, and inflammatory cytokine activity following LBP administration.

Blood Sugar and Metabolic Health

Several studies have investigated the potential role of LBPs in glycemic regulation. Both animal and preliminary human studies have reported reductions in fasting blood glucose, improvements in insulin sensitivity, and favorable changes in lipid profiles following supplementation. These findings make goji berry an area of interest for individuals focused on metabolic wellness, though clinical trials in human populations remain limited.

Potential Goji Berry Side Effects

Goji berries are widely consumed as a food and generally considered safe for most individuals. Adverse effects are uncommon at typical supplemental amounts but may include mild gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals who are sensitive to Goji berries. Goji berry may interact with anticoagulant medications such as warfarin, as case reports have documented elevated INR values in individuals consuming goji berry alongside blood thinners. Individuals taking diabetes medications should also exercise caution, given the potential for additive blood sugar–lowering effects.

As with any supplement, individuals with allergies to plants in the Solanaceae family (commonly known as nightshades) or those who are pregnant or nursing should consult a healthcare provider before use.

Solubility: Water-soluble.

What to take with: Goji berry extract powder dissolves readily in water, juice, or herbal teas. For vision-specific benefits, consider
pairing with lutein and astaxanthin, which work synergistically with zeaxanthin to protect the macula. It also blends well into morning smoothies or overnight oats.

When to take: Goji berry supplement can be taken at any time of day. Morning use is convenient for those incorporating it into a daily wellness drink or smoothie.

Recipes

Goji Berry Tea: Dissolve 500mg of goji berry extract powder into 8–10 oz of hot (not boiling) water or green tea. Add a few dried whole goji berries if desired for visual appeal and additional fiber. Sweeten with raw honey or stevia to taste. This preparation mirrors traditional goji berry tea preparations used in Chinese wellness practices.

Goji Antioxidant Smoothie: Blend 500mg of goji berry extract with 1 cup of mixed berries, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, 1 cup of
almond milk, and a handful of spinach. These ingredients deliver a broad spectrum of complementary antioxidants alongside the LBPs in the extract.

Spoon Set or Scale Needed?

Measuring spoons provide approximate servings for those
incorporating the powder into recipes but may not achieve the desired precision. A milligram scale helps ensure exact measurements and serving sizes.
