L-Cysteine HCl anhydrous is a hydrochloride salt of l-cysteine. Bonding cysteine to hydrochloride improves its absorption. L-Cysteine, or simply cysteine, is a semi-essential, sulfur-containing amino acid and an important structural component in many proteins. One of its unique traits is its ability to form or reduce disulfide bonds. As an antioxidant, the thiol group on cysteine reacts with reactive free radicals that may cause oxidative harm and stress. It is also necessary to synthesize the antioxidant tripeptide glutathione. Glutathione levels drop without sufficient cysteine.
Cysteine is present in many protein-rich foods, such as chicken, eggs, and legumes. It’s also frequently used as a flavoring agent. However, it’s often difficult to consume enough cysteine from food alone, and taking supplements can help produce more reliable results. N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) is another popular cysteine supplement.
Cysteine is a critical building block for glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in the human body. Glutathione scavenges hydrogen peroxide free radicals and reduces them to harmless compounds. Cysteine is safe to take for most individuals. Some people may experience dizziness, nausea, or headache. Taking cysteine with food often prevents or reduces these side effects. Individuals with heart conditions should not take cysteine, as regular supplementation may increase homocysteine. Cysteine may interact with immunosuppressants, and individuals taking those drugs should consult with a physician before taking cysteine.
