What is Magnesium Aspartate?

Magnesium L- aspartate is a chelated magnesium salt of aspartic acid. Combining magnesium with aspartic acid improves its bioavailability. Research shows this form of magnesium offers greater bioavailability than magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate. Magnesium and aspartic acid both play important roles in human metabolism, protein synthesis, and energy production.

Magnesium deficiencies are common, affecting 15-20% of the population in developed countries and up to 30% of any given population. Many individuals fail to consume enough magnesium through dietary sources, and taking a magnesium supplement can attenuate insufficiencies. The foods with the highest magnesium content include leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, and animal tissue. Chronic deficiencies have a strong association with type 2 diabetes, muscle twitching, hypertension, obesity, and malabsorptive conditions.

PureBulk’s magnesium l-aspartate consists of 12% magnesium by weight. Please note that Magnesium L-Aspartate is insoluble in water. Please encapsulate this supplement, or add it to fruit juice or smoothies to aid in taking.

What Does Magnesium Do in the Body?

Magnesium is an essential mineral and cofactor for more than 600 enzymatic reactions in the body. Every cell in the body needs magnesium to function. It helps synthesize adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for energy and metabolize carbohydrates. It’s also involved in synthesizing DNA and is essential for optimal protein synthesis. The body uses magnesium for other biosynthetic processes, too, such as glycolysis and forming cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).

Aspartic acid is an amino acid that exists in two forms: L-aspartic acid and D-aspartic acid. The L-isomer is the proteinogenic form, meaning the body uses it to synthesize proteins. Like magnesium, aspartic acid helps produce energy, as it is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle. Aspartate, the ionic form of aspartic acid, is the precursor to several essential amino acids, including isoleucine, lysine, methionine, and threonine. Aspartate also plays a role in the urea cycle to help remove highly toxic ammonia from the body.

Potential Magnesium Benefits

Magnesium for Exercise Performance

The body’s demand for magnesium increases during exercise. Clinical research shows that magnesium aspartate is extremely effective at reducing fatigue, which may aid exercise performance. It also helps improve muscle weakness and reduce muscle cramps. Another study found that magnesium supplements improved athletes’ physical performance, protected cyclists from muscle damage, and improved power output and muscle mass in women. Individuals with insufficient magnesium may experience even greater improvements in exercise performance.

Magnesium for Mood

Research has explored magnesium’s effect on mood for over a century. Magnesium converts into mood-regulating neurotransmitters including tryptophan and serotonin. Magnesium deficiencies can lead to insufficient serotonin and worsen mood disorders. Magnesium can also block N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) ion channels. NMDA receptors have a strong correlation to mood disorders, and inhibiting their excessive activation may improve mood.

Magnesium for Sleep

Magnesium supplements may improve sleep quality. Individuals with insufficient magnesium often suffer from sleep disturbances, as the body requires magnesium for quality sleep. Magnesium also plays a role in synthesizing the sleep hormone melatonin. Magnesium binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors to calm neuron excitement for better relaxation. Studies also show that magnesium helped individuals fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.

Which Magnesium is Best for Constipation?

Magnesium hydroxide is usually the best for relieving constipation. The hydroxide form draws water into the intestines to soften stool and stimulate bowel movements. The intestines only absorb 4% of the magnesium from this form, which makes it a good option for individuals that shouldn’t take magnesium supplements.

Magnesium for Constipation

Individuals often take magnesium supplements to relieve occasional constipation. Excessive amounts of magnesium may cause diarrhea. However, chelated forms of magnesium bound to organic compounds like aspartic acid are much gentler on the gastrointestinal tract and less likely to cause this side effect.

Potential Magnesium Side Effects

Magnesium is an essential mineral that individuals must obtain through dietary sources. Most individuals can take magnesium supplements without experiencing adverse reactions. Some individuals may experience upset stomach, nausea, or diarrhea. Magnesium supplements may interact with some antibiotics, diuretics, and heart medications. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) may interact with magnesium aspartate and increase magnesium blood levels, particularly in those with impaired renal function. Individuals taking these medications or with kidney disorders should consult a physician before taking magnesium supplements.
