What is Magnesium Lactate Dihydrate?

Magnesium lactate dihydrate is a salt form of the essential mineral magnesium bonded with lactic acid. It has a neutral to mild taste, making it popular to use in mineral-infused foods and beverages. It also helps regulate food acidity. The body absorbs magnesium lactate readily, and this form is gentler on the digestive system than others. Magnesium facilitates hundreds of processes in the body, and supplements may provide several benefits.

What Does Magnesium Do in the Body?

Every cell in the body requires magnesium to function. It’s a necessary component in hundreds of metabolic processes, serving as a cofactor for more than 600 biological reactions. Magnesium supports muscle, immune, and nerve function and plays a distinctive role in energy transport. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the main carrier of metabolic energy in the body. ATP can only become biologically active by binding to a magnesium ion. Magnesium enables several other biosynthetic processes, such as glycolysis, adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) formation, and genetic code transmission for protein synthesis.

Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms

Magnesium deficiencies are a common health problem that affects roughly half of the US population. The typical western diet doesn’t feature many magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, and beans. Some magnesium deficiency symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Abnormal skin sensations (e.g., tingling, numbness, pricking, etc.)
  • Tremors
  • Migraines
  • Muscle cramps

Potential Benefits of Magnesium Lactate

Magnesium Lactate and Heartburn

Magnesium lactate may help alleviate several gastrointestinal issues caused by an excess of stomach acid. These include acid indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach. Magnesium helps neutralize stomach acid to alleviate these problems. It also plays a role in digestion. Magnesium helps relax smooth muscles like the pyloric sphincter that allows food to enter the small intestine. Magnesium deficiencies can impair this process, causing food to remain in the stomach for longer. Hindering gastric emptying places too much stress on the lower esophagus and results in acid reflux.

Magnesium Lactate and Migraines

Numerous scientific studies have noted a correlation between insufficient magnesium and migraine frequency. One study had individuals affected by migraines perform a magnesium load test by taking magnesium lactate supplements. The researchers noted that participants who experienced migraine with aura were magnesium deficient. Replenishing magnesium may help reduce the frequency of this type of migraine by inhibiting the common aura manifestations. Magnesium has also proven effective against premenstrual and menstrual migraines. Magnesium supplements may further diminish the likelihood of migraines by alleviating inflammation, reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, and relaxing muscles.

Best Magnesium for Constipation

Most magnesium supplements can alleviate constipation. However, magnesium hydroxide is the best form to achieve this result.

Magnesium for Constipation

Magnesium supplements often produce a laxative effect when taken in large doses. They have an osmotic effect that increases fluids in the small intestines to soften stools.

Potential Side Effects of Magnesium Lactate

Most individuals tolerate magnesium lactate supplements well, as it’s gentler on the stomach than other types of magnesium. Some individuals may experience diarrhea, but this is more typical with large doses. Individuals with renal dysfunction should not take magnesium supplements. Magnesium may interact with some medications. These include bisphosphonates, tetracycline- and quinolone-type antibiotics, and certain thyroid medications.
