Product Details

Pantothenic acid is an essential vitamin more commonly referred to as vitamin B5. Pantothenic acid is an amide between pantoic acid and beta alanine. It’s most often found as an alcohol analog, either as panthenol or calcium pantothenate. Pure Bulk’s pantothenic acid is calcium pantothenate, which is a calcium salt of vitamin B5. Calcium pantothenate is the superior supplement form of vitamin B5, as it offers much greater stability than the free acid form. As a B vitamin, pantothenic acid is water-soluble.

Pantothenic acid is an essential vitamin. It is critical for the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA), a helper molecule that helps produce fatty acids and initiates the citric acid cycle. Fatty acids store a significant amount of energy, and the citric acid cycle releases that energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the body’s primary fuel source. Vitamin B5 plays an essential role in metabolizing the macronutrients protein, carbohydrates, and fatty acids.

Potential Pantothenic Acid Benefits

Pantothenic acid has antimicrobial properties and may improve wound healing. It synergizes with vitamin C to improve its wound-healing effects. Vitamin B5 helps moisturize skin and enhances the skin barrier. Its antioxidant properties may support the immune system, as it is able to reduce inflammation. Pantothenic acid also triggers the production of cytokines, which send signals to activate the immune system.

Pantothenic acid may support heart health as well. Pantothenic acid helps break down fatty acids and may help balance cholesterol levels. CoA helps lower blood levels of triglycerides, the primary type of body fat in humans. By producing more CoA, pantothenic acid may help support this process.

There is growing interest in the potential benefits of vitamin B5 for skin and hair health. Vitamin B5 helps moisturize skin and maintain skin integrity. It may help with acne as well by reducing lesions, improving wound healing, and reducing inflammation. One study examined the hair benefits of a compound containing vitamin B5 and found it improved the thickness of hair fibers. Hair pliability and resistance to breakage also improved.

Potential Pantothenic Acid Side Effects

Pantothenic acid doesn’t typically have side effects. If taken in excessively high doses, it may cause mild diarrhea. Because it is water-soluble, the body excretes any excess of vitamin B5 in urine.

Note: Our Calcium Pantothenate has low solubility at approximately 50mg/ml. We recommend putting it in capsules, adding to fruit juice, or mixing it into smoothies for best results.
