What is Psyllium Husk Powder?

Psyllium, also known as ispaghula, comes from the husks of the Plantago ovata plant’s seeds. Psyllium husk powder is a soluble dietary fiber supplement that helps relieve constipation and diarrhea. Psyllium also helps improve and maintain the transit of food through the GI tract. Additionally, psyllium husk powder may help balance cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Potential Psyllium Husk Benefits

Psyllium Fiber Supplement

Psyllium husk acts as a bulk-forming laxative. It binds to food moving through the small intestines and draws in liquid to create a bulky, softer, and looser stool that is easier to pass. Individuals can take psyllium husk supplements to relieve occasional constipation or as a regular additive to their diet to promote bowel regularity. One study noted psyllium husk is a superior laxative compared to wheat bran. Another study reported that psyllium husk promoted easier-to-pass stools and improved bowel frequency even in chronically constipated participants.

Psyllium husk powder can also relieve diarrhea. It increases stool thickness, which slows down its progression through the large intestines. One study examined psyllium’s effects on individuals with lactose intolerance. It dramatically improved how long it took their stomachs to empty, effectively reducing their overall number of bowel movements. Other research confirms that psyllium husk is an effective means to reduce and inhibit diarrhea.

Psyllium husk powder supports overall digestive health as well. It is a prebiotic agent that nourishes good gut bacteria and contributes to a healthy gut microbiome. It’s also resistant to fermentation, meaning it is less likely to cause the gas or stomach pains typical of other soluble fibers. However, gut bacteria can sometimes slowly ferment psyllium to produce short-chain fatty acids that benefit digestive health.

Psyllium Husk + Weight Loss

Psyllium husk has significant potential as a weight loss aid. Eating more soluble fiber like psyllium husk reduces the likelihood of overeating. It helps individuals feel full faster by slowing how quickly their stomachs empty. One six-month study noted that psyllium supplements helped overweight individuals significantly improve their body mass index (BMI). Animal research shows that taking psyllium husk with l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) improves its anti-obesity properties.

Psyllium Husk + Heart Health

Psyllium husk fiber promotes heart health in several ways. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol by preventing the intestines from absorbing bile acid. The liver uses cholesterol to produce bile acid, and preventing its absorption allows the body to excrete the cholesterol through stools. Soluble fibers typically produce a 5% reduction in LDL (bad) cholesterol when individuals consume 5-10g of it per day. One study noted psyllium husk slightly outperforms the average by producing a 6% reduction. In addition to lowering blood lipids that clog the arteries, psyllium husk also improves heart muscle strength and blood pressure. Psyllium husk has significant potential for individuals with blood sugar irregularities. Numerous studies show that psyllium husk helps improve insulin sensitivity and manage blood glucose while fasting and after meals.

Potential Psyllium Husk Side Effect

Most individuals can take psyllium husk powder without experiencing side effects. Some individuals may have digestive side effects such as nausea, bloating, and gas. Taking psyllium husk with plenty of fluids may reduce these. Individuals with intestinal blockages, difficulty swallowing, or psyllium husk allergies should not take this supplement.
