Theobromine, also known as xantheose, is a dimethyl xanthine discovered in cacao beans in 1841. It derives its name from the Greek root words theo and broma, meaning god and food (i.e., food of the gods). It is a naturally occurring compound related to caffeine and is the predominant alkaloid found in chocolate and cocoa. Because of its similarities to caffeine, it may provide many of the same benefits with one notable difference. Caffeine can cause unwanted side effects like jitters and accelerated heartbeat, but theobromine is much milder in comparison.
Individuals can consume theobromine in a variety of ways. Some of the most common theobromine sources include cacao, cocoa, and chocolate. Tea leaves also contain theobromine but at a much lower concentration. There are several problems with trying to obtain benefits from edible theobromine sources.
While chocolate does contain theobromine, milk chocolate only offers 60mg of theobromine per serving. Concentrations of theobromine in dark chocolate are higher (around 200mg), but this is only around half the amount of theobromine individuals need to experience potential benefits.
Individuals would have to consume nearly seven servings of milk chocolate to experience theobromine’s benefits, which equates to just over 1000 calories. Even with its higher theobromine content, individuals would have to eat a double serving of dark chocolate to see any possible benefits—or around 325 calories. There is also no way of knowing the exact theobromine content in any given piece of chocolate. Most individuals opt to take theobromine powder instead of food sources to achieve more reliable results, as many of theobromine’s benefits depend on an accurate dose.
Theobromine powder has the potential to provide a number of significant benefits. Some of the most notable include:
Theobromine powder is generally well tolerated when taken in appropriate doses. When taken at high doses for extended periods, individuals may experience headaches, negative changes in mood, loss of appetite, and nausea. When taken in high doses, theobromine may increase heart rate.
As a dietary supplement, individuals should take 400mg of theobromine powder per day. To avoid unwanted side effects, individuals should not exceed 1200mg of theobromine powder per day. For the most accurate dosage, a milligram scale is recommended.
