Product Details

What is Arginine?

L-arginine base powder is a free form of L-arginine, an amino acid that is a component in many proteins. It is a central part of the urea cycle, a process that allows the body to dispose of excess ammonia. Arginine is also the precursor to creatine, glutamate (the precursor to glutamine), and proline. Arginine is usually a non-essential amino acid, as the body can synthesize it from citrulline. However, it can become semi-essential while recovering from injuries or in individuals with kidney or intestinal disorders.

PureBulk derives this l-arginine base powder from glucose via molasses sugar. It is vegan- and vegetarian-friendly.

L-Arginine and the Urea Cycle

Ammonia is a toxic substance that the body must eliminate by converting it into glutamine via glutamate or through the urea cycle. Arginine plays a key role regardless, as it’s a precursor to glutamate and actively participates in the urea cycle.

Ammonia must first convert into carbamoyl phosphate before it can enter the cycle. The carbamoyl phosphate then transfers a phosphate group to ornithine to convert into citrulline. From there, the citrulline converts into argininosuccinate, which produces arginine when broken down. Arginase enzymes begin the last step of the cycle by cleaving arginine to form ornithine and urea. The ornithine can then return to the start of the cycle while the body excretes the urea through the urine.

Potential L-Arginine Benefits

Arginine as a Nitric Oxide Booster

The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide produces a vasodilation effect, which relaxes blood vessels, widens arteries, and improves blood flow. Wider, more relaxed blood vessels may enhance exercise performance and support heart health.

L-Arginine and L-Citrulline

Numerous scientific studies have examined l-arginine and l-citrulline’s roles as nitric oxide boosters. The body can make nitric oxide by using citrulline to produce arginine. Unfortunately, nitric oxide has an incredibly short half-life, which limits its ability to exert benefits. However, research shows that citrulline and reduced glutathione synergize to sustain nitric oxide levels for longer.

Best Nitric Oxide Supplements

PureBulk carries numerous nitric oxide boosters. These include:

L-Arginine and Exercise Performance

Nitric oxide plays an important role in exercise. It helps deliver nutrients and oxygen to muscles during intense exercise by improving blood flow. A clinical trial found that arginine supplements produced dramatic increases in nitric oxide, allowing participants to exercise for much longer than the placebo group. Another study examined arginine’s effects on athletes over a six-week period. The participants taking arginine supplements performed significantly better than the placebo group.

Arginine and Heart Health

Improving nitric oxide goes beyond enhancing athletic performance. It can also support heart health by improving circulation. It also helps to reduce pressure in blood vessels by relaxing them. Research also shows that arginine helps reduce chest pain.

Arginine and Immune System Function

Arginine has several interactions with the immune system. It helps develop T-cells, a type of white blood cell that protects the body from infections by attacking antigens directly. T-cells also direct the humoral immune response to help B-cells eliminate invading pathogens by creating antibodies. Arginine also promotes rapid lymphocyte production for faster wound healing.

Potential L-Arginine Side Effects

Research shows that doses up to 20g of arginine are likely safe; however, this far exceeds the recommended 600mg. Doses in excess of 10g may cause an upset stomach or diarrhea. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects from standard doses, such as bloating, stomach pain, or nausea. Arginine may interact with certain medications and medical conditions. Individuals with kidney or liver disease or those taking blood pressure medication should consult a physician before taking arginine supplements. Individuals recovering from a recent heart attack should not take arginine supplements.

Vegan l-arginine supplement has a slight ammonia smell when first opening the container. However, the odor dissipates quickly. The product is not breaking down and is safe to consume.
